I am interested in buying a Rock River LAR-9. I was concerned about the magazines. I see that they take Uzi magazines. I know Uzi magazines are readily available and very cheap, often less than $10 a piece. However, do they have to be modified in order to function in the LAR-9? If so, what modification is required and can the modifications be done easily? I don't want to have to fork over the $35 per mag that Rock River sells them for on their site if I can avoid it.

Also, any other input or suggestions about the LAR-9 are welcomed. I am looking to make it the host for either a SBR suppressed rifle or an integrally suppressed rifle. Thanks!

Have a LAR-9. Not sure about the mags...curious myself. I bought 3 from RRA when I bought the gun and haven't needed more. If the conversions are easy, I'd love to pick up a bunch more.

Gun from the factory was good....really cheap triggerguard but Magpuls are like $20 and I was changing out a bunch of stuff anyway.

Functioned great, finish is holding up well. I shoot the crap out of mine and hardly clean it...cast bullets too.

Ohh..the little feed ramp screwed into the lower receiver kept coming loose. A bit of loctite on the set screw and no more problems.

Perfect, perfect little rifle for an EOtech. My 4 yr old son shoots clay pigeons at 50 yards with the gun...of course I hold it but he aims using the EOtech and slaps the trigger. Has a blast doing it.

After shooting my gun a friend tried to find one for his wife...darn things are hard to locate. Looked for months and finally gave up. If you can find one, I'd say go for it.

I use the C-Products mags in mine, they even lock the bolt open, the modified Uzi mags don't lock the bolt open. You want the ones with the orange followers, the back followers need some work to come up high enough to activate the bolt hold open. I think AIM Surplus still had some last time I looked.

I also tried a few Pro-Magags, they were cheap, and unlike most Pro-Mags have so far worked well after I removed the molding flash from the feed area, but they didn't feed out of the wrapper because of this, nor do they lock the bolt open.

I like the converted Uzi mags myself, they have longer feed ramps that feed hollow points better than CP mags. There is a diagram on Arfcom on where to make the needed cuts. I modified 3 of them myself, with a drill, cut off wheel in a die grinder, and a small burr bit to perfect the rough cuts. All mags worked 100%, and looked just like the supplied RRA mag. Be carefull using CP mags with the hold open follower, mine broke a mag catch just after I started using them. Apparently the super heavy 9mm bolt is hard on the catch when it slams into it. Spacers in the reciever extention limiting the bolt rearward travel, will prevent the breakage by not giving the bolt any forward momentum, but can lead to other problems I found out. Best to stay with factory modified RRA mags(Uzi mags) with no hold open.

To answer your original question, the main modification required to turn an Uzi mag into a SMG mag is to add the mag catch slot for the Colt style mag release. (about an inch down from the top of the magazine) There are other "tweaks" that make them run better.... but that is the main one.
