I just spent an afternoon at the range with my PSL, and it's left me with some questions for all you other PSL owners out there. First off, mine is one of the TG imports, with the grey crackle finish Romanian 4x scope. This optic's tritium reticle illumination was either dead or removed. The scope elevation adjustment was at zero, but the windage was cranked all the way left, and it took me a while to figure out that I needed to come aproximately 14 clicks to "Dreapta", which I guess is "right". I'm told these clicks are 1.8 MOA at 100 meters... the guy to my left packed up and left around then without retrieving his target... I hope it was a coincidence.
I tried the three different loads that I could find without too much trouble; The combloc surplus stuff that comes in the paper and twine (brass case), 147 grain (supposedly) Czech silvertip steel cased, and the Wolf 148 grain bimetal FMJ. Basically that's how they shot in order of worst to best.
The paper and twine stuff was wildly erratic. I had two packages of twenty from two different gun stores. The first ten went into a 4 inch square at 100 yards, but loading from the other package only 18/20 hit the paper. The Czech stuff would stay inside the 8 ring on a 12' bullseye 100 yard sight in target, and the Wolf was inside the 9 and mostly inside the 10 ring.
Now for the questions;
(1) What optics do you have on your PSL and how do you like them? Illuminated reticle? Russian/Yugo/Romanian/Chinese?
It was getting dark around an hour before the range closed, and I was having trouble picking up the 100 meter chevron, especially since I ran out of orange/white sight in targets and had to switch to black/white bullseyes. And really, without the tritium I'm actually going more primitive than authentic Warsaw pact, and that's just crazy.
(2) Anyone have a good source for the Sellier & Belot 174 grain match, or the Norma match loading in 7.62x54R? Or any other reccomendation for that matter? Favorite surplus load?
(3) I wasn't shooting that fast with only one 10 round magazine, about 160 rounds in 2.5 hours, but I had to take a cool down break after about 80 rounds as I was seeing some vertical stringing. Is that common? Towards the end, as the temperature dropped from high fifties to high forties, I started experiencing vision distortion through the scope as the heat rose off the barrel.
(4) What's the proper sight in procedure for these? I have a vague recollection that one is supposed to have a specific target with a big rectangle, and using the 300 meter chevron be x centimeters high at 100 meters... but of course I didn't do that, because I can't remember anything more about it.
(5) I didn't have a problem with cheekweld/length of pull, much, but is that rubber eyepiece really supposed to mush your eye protection against your head with each shot?
