I prefer the square butt guns. I've even sold a couple of Smiths because they had round butts. The round butt just feels, well, weird to me. I may be too old fashioned. I'm hoping the factory round butt fad fades away and they start building blued square butt guns again.
I think I shoot the square butts better, the grips feel more comfortable. The older factory target grips in K frame size allow me to point shoot fairly well. Hitting running rabbits, squirrels, or things thrown in the air. They also make snap shooting at random plinking targets seem easy for me.
The earliest Smiths were more of a round butt design, then in the early 1900's, the square butt predominated. I'm thinking since the factory target grips became so atrocious feeling, more like a 2x4 block than a gun grip like nicely rounded ones in the 50's thru the 70's, that most people put aftermarket grips on them, so the round butt is covered up anyway.
A couple hours work with a file, sandpaper, and Caseys True Oil do wonders for the square feeling target grips of later years.
Your model 58 is a larger frame size than your other Smith. Just having grips that fit you well make a noticable difference in how good the gun feels to you. Some factory target grips for the N frame model 58 that are similar to the older ones may make a difference, or some sort of aftermarket grips that fit you well.
