This afternoon I picked up a Ruger 22/45 Lite (pic at link).

The Lite version of the 22/45 has a thin 4.4” steel barrel surrounded by an aluminum shroud. Combined with the Zytel grip frame, it weighs only 22.8 oz. But what’s perhaps most interesting is that the end of the barrel is threaded 1/2”x28, for the express purpose of mounting a sound suppressor (AKA silencer). From the factory, the threads are protected with a knurled aluminum nut with the same diameter as the barrel shroud.

The Ruger came with two 10-round magazines and a optics rail which allows you to mount a scope or a red dot on the gun. It also comes with a padlock so you can lock the bolt open to prevent unauthorized, and a pistol rug. Overall, it’s a nice package.

After getting the Ruger home I ran a couple patches through the bore, and lubricated it with a generous amount of Castrol automatic transmission fluid. (ATF makes a great gun oil and is a decent cleaner in a pinch.)

Along with my dad I took the Ruger to the range tonight. We put 150 rounds through it. The first 100 were CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain solids. In our experience if a .22 autoloader won’t run on Mini-Mags, it has problems. As expected, it ran perfectly with them.

We also put 50 rounds of CCI subsonic hollowpoints through the Ruger. We experienced two failures of the gun to fully go into battery with the subsonic loads. I’m hoping that if I run a couple hundred more high speed rounds through it, it’ll be sufficiently broken in to offer similar reliability with the slower, quieter ammo.

I noticed after about 50 rounds the the front sight blade on the Ruger, which is held on with one screw, came loose. I noticed before it fell off and tightened it back up with the small screwdriver on my Swiss Army Knife, but tomorrow when I clean the gun I’ll put a drop of Loctite on the screw to keep it in place.

The one thing needs attention is the trigger pull. It’s heavy, with some slack and take up. I’m going to look into something like a Volquartsen trigger to reduce the weight and make the pull more crisp. Aside from the trigger, I’m pleased with the Ruger 22/45 Lite.

Of course, the other accessory I am seriously considering is getting a suppressor for it. My first step with be to form an NFA gun trust, then decide which can I want to buy. For more information on such trusts, check out David Goldman’s blog.

All in all, a fun night.

Ruger 22/45 and Ruger Mark III - suppressed

Great read, thank you for posting.

I use to have the same 22/45 you have and the front site blade also came loose. Blue loctite fixed it right up.

I now have the Ruger MarkIII with the pac-lite upper and I put a SWR SpectreII suppressor on it.
It is very quite and have had no jams, etc using Remington SubSonics.
I did start off with min-mags to get it going.

Be carefull with your 22/45 not to overlube it as that causes it to jam up.

I have video of my set up here: www.suppressed22.com

If you weren't aware- all loads you shoot through that pistol will be subsonic.
"Subsonic"-labelled rounds may be slightly quieter, but if you intend to put a can on the pistol someday you don't need to buy them to avoid the sonic crack.

Thanks. IIRC, there are a few light bullet high speed loads that will just break the speed of sound in this pistol, but the bulk stuff probably won't. I mounted a Bushnell TRS-25 tonight and hope to zero it this weekend.

FYI the VQ sear is more important to the pull weight and break of the trigger than the trigger. cheaper too. :)

Fastest one I put through the standard & Lite suppressed 22/45s with threaded barrels was Win HyperVel, it didn't touch the "crack"point.
I doubt anything you find in a .22 rimfire will through those short barrels.

Dave,

I see you are in Plymouth Meeting. Did you get the Ruger locally? I've been looking to handle one of these.

About the failure to return to battery with subsonic ammo. Don't worry my NOS Ruger Mark II did the samething with subsonic but after a brick or two of Federal HP's it is running very well and feeds and fires everything.

Thanks Dave. I've never heard of that place.

I've got a 22/45 5.5" target with replaceable panels. My front sight came loose too and got locktited. I'm using Mobil 1 for lube but have thought about using ATF too. I'm a mechanic so I can get the stuff cheap. Another tech gave me a spare quart of Mobil 1 5w20, doesn't get any cheaper than that! ATF works great to lube air tools too, been using it for years. My trigger could use some work too. I'm think of removing the magazine disconnect and see if it helps. Volquartsen parts fixed my 10/22's trigger so I may end up going that route too. Overall I think it's a great gun and the last time I put it back together I only had to read the instructions three times and kept my swearing to less than a dozen times  I'm getting better! I hear ditching the mag disconnect makes reassembly the same as a MarkII. That alone is worth ditching it.
