I'm not really a revolver expert, so I'm probably not the best guy to point out this link. But, I ran a search, and it seems nobody else has brought up this subject yet.

Long/short, it appears that Ruger is putting out a commemorative 50th Anniversary Flat-Top .357 revo. It seems to be a combination of the current New Model Blackhawks and the older Flat-Top.

OLD FEATURES:

-Smaller overall than the Super Blackhawks, nearly Colt sized
-Old XR-3 grip frame
-Micro-adjustable rear sight

NEW FEATURES:

-Transfer bar
-"Reverse-indexing cylinder pawl", making loading easier
-New, easier hammer spring
-Integral lock (black helicopters... whompwhompwhomp)
-Commemorative gold roll-mark (who likes big gold letters?)

This seems to be just a temporary run, as I gather. However, they are also introducing the "New Vaquero", which is basically a fixed-sight version of the above pistol, in .357 and .45, stainless and blued, in a variety of barrel lengths. Seems they're getting really, really into the CAS concept.

This is one of those things that I idly wondered if Ruger would ever do. I've had a tiny jones for a .357 Ruger Flat-Top since reading the eco-terrorist tome "The Monkeywrench Gang". It feels kind of weird to have this odd new/old hybrid SA revo, but I suppose it addresses a market need. One figures the likelihood of them bringing back the Flat-Top exactly as was is pretty minimal. Confound the lawyers...

Check out www.ruger-firearms.com and see all the odd things they're introducing nowadays. I do applaud creativity; though I don't plan to buy Taurus' "I frame" 9mm snubby revolver, I'm glad to see that someone finally built one. Let the Invisible Hand of the Free Market decide.

If I Remember Correctly

Wasn't someone making XR3 steel replacements at one time?

If I understand it right the stocks are mounted to a metal piece that attaches to the frame but is NOT part of the frame itself. It isn't serial numbered. Get someone to make a forging/casting without the infernal lock and bolt it on!

Looks like a way for us who detest internal locks to get rid of them, and still play with Rugers, no?
