Search wasn't very satisfying, one thread (or post?) and it was about the 77 Mark ii. Is there a trick to getting the plastic medallion out of the (plastic?) grip cap without butchering one or the other? Question was asked in another thread but not answered and didn't really pertain to that thread, thus this new one. Thanks for advice/ instructions. Oh, my question concerns the older tang safety 77, not the Mark ii.

I haven’t ever taken one off/apart. For those who may have better info or are wondering what that cap looks like, here is a close up of the grip cap on my M-77 RSI.

I hope this helps give someone an idea how to help.

Good luck!

Stay safe..

Use a strong magnet and see if there is a screw behind it. If magnetic, you know you have to remove the ruger screaming chicken to access it.

May want to contact Ruger CS and see what they have to say.

See this post.

The cap is two piece - medallion and cap. The medallion hides a screw. Drill through medallion and use thin screwdriver to pop out of the cap. All parts are inexpensive and available through Midway.

Last time i had to remove one of those grip caps and it wasnt on a ruger but same setup. I used some scalding hot boiling water and poured it on medallion little by little as not to soak everything but get it good and hot to help break the glue medallion is held by. Then took a eyeglasses flat head screwdriver very very small. And was able to gently pop the medallion out without damage and gained access to the screw underneath. But like has been said above you dont have to be so careful cause the replacement parts are fairly easy to get and not very expensive. So worst case you have to spend a few bucks on replacment cap or medallion

The replacement grip cap may have less than ideal contour (compared to your original).
Had a pitted one on my dad's old #1.
The brass medallion over the screw did NOT want to come out, even after drilling.
Since my cap was badly pitted I slotted it and cranked out the medallion and then removed screw and pitched the cap (as it was nasty to begin with).
Replacement cap fit no problem, but......it was not symmetrical in contour, off a bit on scallop.
Yup, typical Ruger these days.
The old one was perfect ('74).
