I've been in the market for a target/deer hunting rifle, and yesterday I went around all the local gun shops to see what was being offered.

The main gun that caught my eye was the Ruger M77 Hawkeye in .308 with a walnut stock. it comes with integral scope rings and the guy said he would mount my scope for free. For $630 it seems like a good deal.

What do you guys think of the new Hawkeyes from Ruger? My only concern is that i've heard mixed reports about accuracy, and I do want to use this as a target rifle. One MOA with handloads would be my goal.

The other choice was a Savage 11G for $540, although I'm sure I could get one for less if I went through an FFL.

Nothing wrong with the Hawkeye. You should be able to get to 1" with handloads. Possibly need a trigger tweak, bedding, floating barrel to get there. A more rugged deer rifle you will never find.

The newer Rugers are supposed to be much more consistently accurate than the earlier models. Ruger moved their barrel making process in-house and control the manufacture of them. The Hawkeye design is rugged and dependable. You would want a more supple recoil pad for longer bench sessions. The gun should shoot MOA with handloads worked up for that specific rifle.

My stainless Hawkeye .30-06 is a sub-moa shooter with its prefered loads---cheap Federal 150 grainers from Walmart($14/box).

They have them here all day long for $599 (blued or stainless)---might want to see what they can do on price?

Nope---just the standard one.

Just cleaned the bore--slapped a scope on it---bought some cheap ammo---and it turned out to be a tack driver.

Oh--and wiped it down----was sittin on the rack for a long time and had finger prints and dust all over---a lot of those prints were mine---bought it when they marked it down to $450.
