Ruger mark III: anyone using hiviz sight set?

in advance i double posted, wasn't sure where to put this thread.

hi, i have a mark III target and i was wondering if anyone uses the V-notch Rear Sight and HiViz® Front Sight Set. any improvement over factory? would you recommend for small game hunting situations?

I have a buckmark with a hiviz front sight and a plain black, adjustable rear.

The sight acquisition is really fast in the daytime. In no light or low light, it isn't any faster than all black sight IMO.

To me, an all black sight setup is better for precision shots.

But for general purpose, all around plinking or hunting...I like my hi viz sight. It is definitely accurate enough with the right loads that you can decide which eye socket to shoot on small game. If I was shooting bullseye competition, I would keep a plain black sight to mount at the range.

Many of us MkIII hunter owners have swapped out the rear "v" notch for a normal square notch (with the white outline) and found it to be a better sight picture when transitioning to the high viz front light tube.

That one never worked for me. I find the sight picture to busy and I have a hard time focusing on that front sight. My eye tends to gravitate toward the rear even though my brain is yelling to focus on the front. I've solved this by using all black rears on, well...everything I own. YMMV
 
i have the hiviz front sight on my buckmark and front & rear firesights on my p95 . now i'm able to see and hit WITHOUT my trifocals . higher praise cannot be given. the day i bought my markIII i ordered one for it

No, but I do have the Volquartsen rear target sight that is sweet, along with their hammer, sear and a totally-adjustible match trigger.

I also need to wear trifocals or I cannot see a thing.

I agree with Forumsurfer. I like the hi-viz for general plinking and all around fun but I shoot better for precision with a regular sight. I went back and forth and have the stock sight with some orange paint at this time. No place around here to go out and play except the indoor target range. :(
 
To the OP. I have the exact set up you are asking about. Fiber optic front/v-notch rear. I use my Ruger for small game hunting and "varmint/pest control. That combination works great for me.

jbkebert: thanks for posting pics. that sight will be great for squirrel. i find it hard to see the black iron sights on those critters especially in the woods. i should have my sights by friday according to ruger.
 
The suggested sight picture is a little different that typical. Ruger suggests the dot dead on the target instead of just below intended point of impact. Took me a few mags to adjust myself but now I love it. Just put the dot on what you want to hit and you almost can't help but nail it with this gun.

The sight on mine was factory standard but even with the replacement sights your getting from Ruger come with 6 front sight tubes. 3 green and 3 orange. In 3 different sizes.
 
I have a MKIII Hunter that I shot a few time in Steel Challenge with the stock v-notch and fiber optic sight. It worked awesome for me, but I have since changed the gun out to a open classer with an Ultradot holographic sight. For me the fiber optic combination was not any worse than my pistols with the square rear and black blade (HS Victor, S&W M-14/17), but I have a tough time getting really accurate on paper past about 25 yards with any iron sights.
 
Hey Butcherboy the sights work. I just drilled a rabbit out in the garden. My range finder said 53 yards after the shot. I guess its a good thing that rabbit season is year round in Kansas. I came back into the house to grab my camera but my lab has already disapeared with it. Probably had worms anyhow.
 
jbkebert: cool. im in ny which has over regulated seasons, but luckily since im a farmer small game season is year round for me too. plenty of time for testing.

i also just put thumb rest grips on mine. what a difference.
 
any ideas where I can get the v-notch blade? I struck out on midway and ruger. I've got an old mkii bull barrel that I was planning on putting the fiber front, and I really like the looks of that V rear blade.
 
now that's irritating. I looked on that site under mk2/mk3 parts and nothing came up. oh well. Thanks for the find jbkebert.
