So I recently picked up a Ruger Precision Rifle to use in my range's monthly long range shoots. I've had great luck with, and phenomenal accuracy out of my Tikka CTR .308, but have been wanting to try a 6.5 target rifle, so I branched out and got the Creedmoor. I have seen a few threads on the RPR, but no range report, so I figured I'd post one up.

The rifle came in the week before last, so I loaded up 50 rounds using virgin Hornady brass and 140 gr Nosler Custom Competition bullets ($19.99/100 at the local Sportsmans Warehouse). Unfortunately last weekend was too windy to shoot with sustained winds at 35 to 40 mph, and gusts to 65. Today, however, was perfect with wind at 10mph or less from 6 o'clock all day.

I used H4350 for all my loads, and started at 39.5gr, and worked up to 42.5gr. This is well over book max, but the load that was printed on the early 140gr Amax factory loads was 41.5gr H4350. This combined with the fact that my velocities were below published velocities leads me to believe that i'm not out in left field pressure wise.

Here are my chrono'd velocities:

Factory 140gr ELD-M: 2702, 2695, 2679
140gr Nosler 41gr H4350: 2600, 2588, 2600, 2581, 2568
140gr Nosler 41.5gr H4350: 2637, 2586, 2589, 2583, 2621
140gr Nosler 42gr H4350: 2708, 2651, 2637, 2646, 2660

Velocities and spreads aside, I am very happy with the accuracy, especially for a rifle that only had 24 rds through it before today. All groups are 5 shots at 100 yds. I've never had factory ammo shoot so well, the top group on the factory target is with the thread protector on, the bottom group is with my Saker 762 attached.

As for the rifle itself, I know there have been some reports of loose stocks and cheek rests, and off center rails, but mine has been pretty much perfect in all regards. I'm not sure I have the stock set up right for me yet, as it feels kind of odd compared to my CTR, but I'll keep playing with it until i get it right. The rifle is fairly heavy, but that's a non-issue to me given it's intended use.

I'll probably play with 41.5gr and 42.5gr to see if I can refine them any. I might also try RL17 to see if I can get a little better velocity. I've read on a few other forums that folks see a velocity increase in the first couple hundred rounds on their RPR's as the barrel wears in, if that were the case I'd be happy with 41.5gr H4350.

Just as a bonus, I was also shooting the CTR today and shot the best group I've ever shot:

Just another day at the range for some folks, but It made my day. While I'm more familiar/comfortable with the CTR, I'm thrilled that the RPR shoots as well as it does for a $1,100 factory rifle.

Nice shooting GT, question though are you seeing pressure signs on the brass at 42.5 grains?

Thanks for the range report and nice shooting! On another popular forum dedicated to long range shooting the reviews on the RPR have been pretty good overall. It's looking to be the best entry level rifle of it's type out there to get started for PRS matches. Word is guys are working on aftermarket stuff for them already and I think some guys have already spun up some barrels for them.

My brother was looking at a bolt gun for PRS matches and I'm trying to steer him to a RPR or the Tikka CTR. You've got yourself two great rifles for sure!

Horsemen61,

42.5gr H4350 seems to be a sweet spot and I know a lot of people who also run in the mid 42gr range. I know some people running over 43gr reporting no pressure signs and over 2850fps but thats a pretty hot load I'm my opinion. You should be safe up to 43gr but just work up to be safe. Also, many report better velocity with Reloder 17 but my experience with the Reloder powders is they are very temperature sensitive.

I too have been participating in long range shooting at a local club. I use the Remington 700 Milspec with a KRG Xray Chassis. However, I have been looking at acquiring a 6.5. Thanks for your review of the rifle. It would seem that someone else here is using RL22 for their 6.5 loads. The RPR is certainly in my sights. I have already purchased a Vortex Viper Scope in anticipation of my purchase.

Wow! Definitely some really nice groups there with your new Ruger Precision rifle! I am also interested in how they do, especially in 6.5 Creedmoor.

And an extra Wow! for that super tight group from your CTR!

I thought I saw the beginnings of primer cratering on one of the 42gr loads while I was out, but I couldn't find evidence of cratering on any of them when I got home and inspected more closely... Maybe it was just the way the sun was hitting the primer. None of the primers looked overly flat or had leakage, but I haven't deprimed them yet to see if the pockets are still nice and tight. Bolt lift was easy on all loads.

I know Reloader powders tend to be temperature sensitive, but I though I had heard that 17 wasn't as bad in that respect as, say 22. I haven't seen anything backing that up however.

In my experience RL15 is really bad and I've had some issues with RL17 too. They are nowhere near as stable as Hodgdon powders. My buddy and I shoot anywhere from mid teens in the winter to 100 degree days (Varget & H4350 are our typical powders of choice) during the summer and see very little change. The data stays near identical except for density altitude adjustments.

I only mentioned RL17 for those that live in areas with less extreme temperature ranges looking for more velocity.or those willing to put in the time to record the difference in different temperature ranges.

Very nice Scotty. I was just asking on another thread about where the range reports for the RPR and missed yours entirely. Thanks for posting it

BTW, shoot me the load specifics on that awesome group you shot with the CTR. Did you chrono it?

The load in the bottom pic was:

178gr Amaxes
Hornady Match cases (this was their third firing)
43gr Varget
OAL 2.885" (0.005 off the lands)
CCI 200 primers

I didn't chrono that particular group, when I did chrono these they were right around 2570 fps. I'm also looking at 43.5, and they were very consistent at 2590 - 2595 fps.

I had a great load at 44.3gr, that chrono'd at 2645 fps, and shot very consistently. Unfortunately, it became apparent after I started getting ejector marks and loose pockets on some brass that it was too warm for my rifle.

As an aside, I did a little study on some of the .308 brass I had around including Winchester, SSA, FC, and Hornady Match. In terms of consistency in weight and case volume, the Hornady was quite good, and had a case capacity right around the less consistent Winchester cases that I had been using before.
