Ruger Redhawk...what a gun

I have loved the Ruger Redhawk for over 30 years, and the 41mag is my favorite caliber of that revolver. I have three of them and all stainless. My first is a 7.5" with a 2X Leupold Scope that has been used for hunting Whitetail deer and Mule deer here in Texas. I even took a spotted fallow at 85yards with it. I also have a 5.5" and a 4".......yes a 4", that I made from another 5.5". I cut the barrel, trued it up with files & stones, recut the crown and installed a new front sight........and did all this about a year before Ruger decided to come out with their 4". I love the 4". It is a perfectly balanced gun that Ruger was always striving to be. Here are my three 41mag Redhawks.

James,

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you on the barrel gunk, been a little preoccupied. I would first run a few wet patches using some strong cleaner like Barnes or possibly even Sweets mixed with a little Kroil. This will let you know right away if it is copper or not. If so it will generally take it out in short order and a good oiling afterwords will leave it non the worse for it. If it isn't copper, then you might try using the Flitz or JB paste on a patch and a .410 jag and see if that don't get it.

In all the years of owning the SS Rugers the only actual rust I have seen on them has been on the main spring of my 41 which got submerged. Even that was mainly only superficial and with some Scotch Brite and Kroil it cleaned right up. I haven't been overly tender with any of mine in that we hunt no matter what the weather. Sometimes they are wet for several days on end depending on where we were hunting, and how well things could get cleaned up. Either my 41 or my 44 generally rides in the holster around the handle bars of my Polaris for easy access if we encounter a pack of hogs. With the weather and dust, they have survived much longer than some which would cost much more and have accounted for many pounds of pork.

Good luck with yours and I would wager that what your seeing is not actually rust but is probably fouling as has been mentioned.

41mag,
Looking at the bore again. it seems to be more copper colored rather than rust color. Last time I cleaned it I did get some blue/green on my patches but it cleared up. Maybe the Hopps is not doing the trick. I am right now soaking the bore and I have a new brass brush I will try.

I might have to go out and look for a better copper cleaner if this doesn't work. I have been thinking of the Flitz polish but I would rather not go that route yet.

damn you guys....every time i convince myself that I want a 5.5" model someone talks good about the 4" and puts me back in undecided mode

Man a 45 Colt with a 7.5 would be the icing on the cake for me. Still looking, maybe someday. Heck even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.

JJJ,

I have an Aimpoint as well on my 7 1/2" 44 Mag. I use rubber though instead of wood. I find it better in inclement weather and better on the recoil too.

Nice gun you have!

A 5.5 stainless was my first... I absconded dads 7.5 stainless and I grabbed a bue 7.5 with rings for cheap on closeout... I like mine quite a bit ;)

Why would you want a full underlug?!? Are you afraid that Rugers aren't strong enough?

No, it's more of a weight balance issue. Not that I have that problem, but some folks prefer a massive barrel to help compensate for recoil.

I've got two of 'em. A blued 5.5" 44mag and a stainless 4" 44mag. I love them both, but I have to say that the new stainless 4" Redhawk is probably the best revolver Ruger has put out to date. It's a new classic with a fantastic trigger and perfect ergonomics, balance and handling.
