Please forgive my ignorance regarding Ruger revolvers, as I'm primarily a S&W fan.

However, today at a local shop, I noticed a Ruger Speed Six, stainless steel, with what appeared to be a 2 3/4" barrel. It looked to be in very good condition, with the box. It was a .38 Special version.

What would an approximate value range for this revolver be? Is there anything rare about the .38 version? Any tips, tricks, or info that I should know about it, as opposed to S&W's?

Thanks in advance.

Prices are what a buyer is willing to pay--but I would guess somewhere in the $275-325 range if the gun is in decent shape. The same basic piece was also made in an adjustable sighted version, and more commonly found in .357; so a fixed sighted .38 Spl might be had for a bit less.

I wouldn't call the .38 version particularly rare. Ruger made that option available for departments unable to use the .357 version for reasons of political correctness or whatever.

The Sixes are very good guns--not as elegant as S&Ws but they make up for it in durability. One in .38 Spl. should last forever. If any work is needed Ruger does it at a very reasonable price.

$250-$325 I would think would be fair, also this is probably the strongest .38 spcl. you could buy. There is no difference in the frame or cyl. other than chamber between the .38 model and the .357. it would take three lifetimes worth of +p 38s to wear it out.

I am looking for one like the one you are talking about but I want one in .357. I would pay $300 or a bit more for a nice one. I have seen them go for much cheaper though. I bought two Speed Sixes for $175 each about 6 years ago. One was blued and the other was SS. Both were 4" bbls though.

They used to be great deals because you could get them for about $200 all day long. When a S&W often costs at least $300, they made a lot of sense for those of us that knew what we had. Now that they are getting harder to find, the prices are up near S&W levels. I would still buy one but they are not the steal of a deal they used to be.

Here's my Speed Six in 9mm. Although the 9mm variants command somewhat of a premium over the .38 and .357 models, I'd trade this one straight-up for a .357 model. Can't find any moon clips that work with the 9mm Speed Six.

Bulldog, I am interested in that Speed Six! I think I might be able to dig up a .357 for a trade!
