ok I need some help answering some questions. I just recently got this Ruger 44 mag new model super blackhawk with a 10 1/2 in barrel. Based on the serial number it was made in 1981. The gun looks like it was blued before and is now starting to wear off. 1. If left like this would it start to rust? My intentions was to hunt with this gun so it will be in the outdoors. 2. Where could you get another set of grips for this year and with the longer barrel. The pearl grips are really slick and I dont like the feel of them. 3. Also did the rib on the top of the barrel come standard on the older blackhawks? I havent seen another one like it. Any info would be greatly appreciated

The blueing aids in resisting rust by holding the wipe down oil a little better as well as being a little more resistant to allowing the red/brown rust to get going. But it's not as good as you may think at avoiding rust. Just keep the gun lightly wiped down with an oily cloth and all will be well even out in the rain.

I've never seen a rib on a Ruger like that before. The .44 Mag with that long barrel should make a wonderful hunting gun. Warning however. Handgun hunting is as addicting as crack!

Rib

Back years ago I saw one with a rib at a gun show. The guy that had it said it was silver soldered on by his gunsmith and reblued. Did not ask who at the time, but it looked good.

Ruger Super Black Hawk

Thats a new one on me with the vent rib & the other poster hangun hunting is a addictive as bath salts

The rib does look good to me, I just didn't know if it left the factory that way. For the grips I like the pearl look, but they are a little slippery and I'd like something with a little more grip to it( since I will be hunting, steadier aim...etc). Does the longer barrel mean that any ruger superblackhawk grips on ebay will work. Ive seen some but they state for 7 1/2 in barrels and some pre 2005. Handgun hunting seems like it is definitely going to be addicting.

Here's another closer pic of the rib. I can't tell if it's been added to the gun or factory done, maybe y'all can help.

Any grips for the Super Blackhawk dragoon style frame should fit. Your gun has the same gripframe as a 7.5" Super.
The rib is not factory as Ruger never offered one. Keep the gun's surface well oiled and you should be fine.

That's a tapered barrel 10.5" Super, a fairly scarce gun. Too bad about the condition and rib. JMHO

The close ups of the rib suggest to me that it's definetly fitted after. First off the stock front blade mount is still on the barrel. A factory ribbed barrel would not retain the original front sight mount. The rib would have been the front sight mount. Second is the little hook at the barrel to frame transition. The way it's shaped to hook over the frame will not allow the barrel to thread on or off. The factory would NOT have done it that way as normal manufacturing processes would have had the rib added on the line before the barrel was screwed into the frame.

Why not contact Ruger, ship it to them and let them do a factory blue job on it. They,ll do the prep work and can put proper grips on it at the same time, no doubt about the quality of the work then. Then that pistol will look like new again.
