I've got a S&W model 22-A1 .22LR pistol.

About every 3rd or 4th shot with a fully chambered cartridge it just goes click. An examination of the cartridge reveals no dimple on the rim. Light Strike? Opening the slide shows the cartridge fully fed into the chamber.

Performing the failure drill - i.e. pull slide to rear to eject round and release results in no ejection of the bad round and the slide hanging up on the next round (to be expected considering the chambered round stays fully in the chamber and does not eject.

It seems that the slide is not going into full battery when this happens. What can cause this.

Could the recoil buffer be shot? The slide seems a bit loose on the rails. The rear of the slide can be moved up and down by at least a 1/16 of an inch.

I don't think the problem is with the ammo - reloading the duds results in them firing. The same ammo (Aquila 40gr Std Velocity) works without fail and is extremely accurate in my CZ-452. A visual inspection of the duds reveals no firing pin dimple on the rim.

I'm hoping that what ever is causing this is something I can fix. It is just such a pain to ship a handgun back to the manufacturer so any ideas you guys might have would be of great help.
