Hey I have a old swith & wesson .38 h&r, pat'd may 14, 89. aug 6, 95. april 7, 96. It's a 5 shot 5 1/2 inch barrel. Does anyone know how much this gun is worth if anything at all?

I take it that the gun pictured is not the one you have, but one like it.

Judging from the patent dates I say your gun is a black-powder model, and shooting it with modern smokeless ammunition would be questionable. Value is probably between $50 to $125 depending on condition, with the higher figure for an gun in mint or near-mint condition.
