No, seriously, this month's Shooting Times has a cover article on the 4" .500 S&W. They found it, at most, slightly worse to shoot than the standard 8 3/8" model. (They reported painful, punishing recoil from the 440gr max Cor-Bon loads, but so has every other published review of the .500, in whatever format.)
Typical loads fired from the shortened barrel lost about 150 fps compared with the longer barrel. They found this a good tradeoff.
Upshot (per ST): gun is a handful, but is a usable tool for dangerous-game hunters who need a serious backup.
Don't plan on acquiring or shooting one myself, but it's a fun gun to read about.
Zundfolge, I am playing it with whatever the standard windows media player is. Sorry if it's not working, I'm somewhat ignorant about these media formats!
