I did a search but am still curious about the .357 520. I know its a blued hiviz sighted variant of the 620, but that doesnt tell me much about how well it performs. What do you guys have for holsters, any first hand experience? Looks like a fine general use sidearm for the woods.

I own the S&W Model 619 which is the fixed sight version of the M620. It's a great gun, very accutate and fun to shoot too. The holster I use is a black DeSantis Thumb Break Scabbard http://www.desantisholster.com/001.html. If you don't like the Thumb Break model then the Speed Scabbard http://www.desantisholster.com/002.html might be right for you. Both are quality holsters which make carrying a heavy revolver easy to do.

I'm very happy I bought the M619 and would not change my choice. It's a keeper for sure and great fun to shoot.

The original 520 was like a Model 20 .38/44 Heavy Duty only better because of the .357 Magnum chambering.
They were made for the New York State Police who then cancelled the contract and they turn up from time to time.
About $450.00 to $600.00 on the market right now.
I haven't seen one of the new versions yet and am not sure I want to.

I think that there isn't much out there because the 619 and 620/520 replaced the Model 66/19 and Model 65/13. Those models were around for many years and were very popular. People are always hard on the person (or thing) that replaces a popular and long standing item. Look at what Harry Truman went through when he took over after Roosevelt's death. It's just a theory, but I own a model 65 and I have no desire to purchase a 619. Nope. Fine gun or not it isn't going to happen.

Since the 6x series is no longer in production and when I bought my first handgun last year I didn't know about the extensive used market, the M619 was my choice. I'm very happy with the M619 and would probably never sell it.

Gator

This thread is about the NEW 520..its a 7 shot L-frame...I have one, it does have adjustable hi-viz sights. I havent gotten a holster yet and I havent tried looking since it my "night stand" gun. I have heard the finish wears pretty quick w/holster use, but cant say first hand.

Its actually my first Smith and my first revolver so I honestly dont have much of a point of reference. I love everything about it especially the 7th shot.

I have one of these. I think that it is a very nice piece being as though I had to send it in for waranty work right out of the box due to factory blemishes. S&W made right on that one. I've owned several S&W's to include a 27-2 and though this revolver doesn't have the craftsman ship of the S&W's of old, I feel that it is a great fighting gun. It has decent capacity for a revolver at seven rounds, it balances well, it is accurate, has a decent trigger and has great sights. I wouldn't have a problem of loading it up with Speer's 135gr+P .38 specials and handing it off to my wife. My flawless 27-2 was a safe queen that I was afraid to shoot and, I sold it off.
