I recently purchased a 625JM and was wondering because it uses the 45acp cartridge can this be loaded and fired the same as a revolver that uses rimmed cartridges or must moonclips be used to load and fire this revolver? Thank you.

I have a model 610 that shoots 10mm. I can shoot them without the moon clip, but they will not extract together without the use of them. The cartridge heads spaces on the brass shell vs on the rim as in other ammo. Now if you reload you could get away without the use of moon clips by using 45 rimmed brass, then the cases would extract.

I have a JM625 as well as several other Smiths that take .45ACP. It's really much easier to shoot them using moon clips.

For ease of reolading the clips, you might want to try the RIMZ plastic clips. The traditional steel ones can do interesting things to your hands and fingers until you buy/make tools to unload them.

You can get 45 Auto Rim Ammo from PMC or or one of the commercial reloaders provides a pretty good deal. My suggestion is to go to www.beckhamdesign.com and get your self some RIMZ full moon poly clips. If your considering self defense with the 625 then you need steel full moon clips.
