S&W 6906 vs. New S&W Compact 9mms

My local gun shop has an EXCELLENT condition (like new) S&W Model 6906 that was made in the early 1990s with 2 pre-bans mags.

I was wondering how this early 1990s S&W compact 9mm compares to the current crop of S&W compact 9mm's (i.e. Chief's Special, etc.)

Also, I remember hearing of some problems with the early production runs of the Model 6906 -- is this correct?

You can tell the first run/second run 3rd gen guns by the trigger guards..they have the squared off design. These guns had a few probs. but not enough to worry about. The round trigger guard guns are the final design and are as reliable as a hammer.

How they compare to the CS is a good question. They are mechanically similar, but a single stack vs double stack and smaller , other than that they are the same.....a CS is a cut down 3913, a 3913 is a single stack 6906...........make sense.

If you like it get it, the 6906 and 3913 have the best reps out there.

The 6906 I am looking at has a "squared off" trigger guard.

The gun shop thinks it was made in the very late 80s or very early 90s.

I bought a (used) 6906 about 13 years ago for $299. It has the squared off triggerguard. I've never had a problem with it except a couple of times where the slide did not lock open on empty. The cause of this was the follower on the mag. It is plastic, and it had worn down a little.

I'm really happy with mine. I do wish it had the Novak sights that came on the last generation, but no big deal. 12+1 in a nice concealable package.

I just got Hogue grips for it yesterday. The plastic grip never was very comfortable.
