Hello Everyone,
I came up with a item to replace the lock on the new Smith's. The only extra tool you need in your kit is a dental pick. I have them on hand, and it take a different one for the "J" frame, K/L/N are the same along with one for the big "X" frame. Here is a picture of one in a "N" frame.

Here is my E-mail: [email protected] I think that it looks great and way better than the lock.

Of course it looks better than the lock. Now we need to figure out a way to blend it in to the rest of the frame and get rid of that arrow and "L"

That looks uglier than the lock.

Also, I don't see what's wrong with the lock. How can a safety device be a bad thing? If you don't like it don't use it.

Some people say it causes malfunctions. Anyone have any documentation of one of the millions of ILS S&W revolvers made in the last 10 years failing because of the lock alone? I think there's a better chance of the gun malfunctioning from someone doing home gunsmithing to remove the thing.

Yes, there have been several documented cases where under recoil the lock has locked up the gun.

Thats bad, IMHO.

I think your solution is a good one, and I'm sure you could refinish the gun and make the plug disappear.

I figured it wouldn't be too long before someone solved that glaring issue. Market them. Clyde Ludwig has likely made a bit selling Marlin crossbolt safety eliminator screws.

I suppose if I really cared, and the revolver was a stainless model (as most now are) the arrow and "L" would go away too after a little polishing.

My problem is that I don't have any revolvers that have a hole to plug...

As an aside: I know of two others that have come up with a similar idea, but didn't market it after they were unable to obtain liability insurance. No underwriter would touch it.

Nice idea.....fortunately I have no use for it, as all my S&W revolvers are lock free.

I have no intention of rewarding Safety Wesson with my dollars for installing that abomination, and ruining their revolver line. :barf:

Does it fill the recess on the inside of the frame, kind of like the Series 80 "shim"? I have read that to be a concern with the lockwork snagging on the corners of the lock recess.

I take out the lock, grind off the offending part, replace the lock and shoot. It looks ugly but my thumb cover the hole when I shoot so I don't care.

I agree that something like this should be accompanied by refinishing, once the lock is gone the hole is merely a cosmetic issue, being that it doesn't do much good to fill the hole if you can still se where the lock is. just my 2 cents

I definitly like where you are heading with it though :)

One that I saw had a plate that replaced the flag. The plug was attached to the plate. When everything was assembled (including the hammer) the plate couldn't go anywere and there was nothing to catch the hammer.

So far as I could see it worked fine, but all it really did was eliminate the hole in the lock, (or frame) which improved the cosmetics - and disable the lock function.

Maybe that's enough...
