Hi all,

After a few months of consideration, today I bought my first AR-15 style rifle. It's a used S&W M&P 15 that I found at my local gun shop in great condition for $599 - took it down in the shop and inspected for wear to make sure there wasn't anything drastically wrong with it. I figure they (AR-style rifles) aren't going to get much cheaper and it's a great platform to have around for numerous reasons.

Thing is - seems like all I hear/read about when it comes to the M&P AR is their Sport or Sport II models. Does anyone have any information about the differentiation between the M&P 15 and the M&P 15 Sport models? Mine has a dust cover and forward assist.

Many thanks,

Leif

I have a the m&p-t
I’m not sure what you want to know however. It’s just a regular AR.. mil spec sizes, no auto bolt but you can run one if you wanted to for some reason. No hole for sear
Free floating quad. 1:8 twist 16in pencil barrel is what it came with. It came with some
Magpul flip sights as well, first gen I think. I got this rifle a while ago.

There are many different models but if you compare the Sport II with the M4 style M&P some of the differences are that the Sport does not have a chrome lined bore and chamber, the Sport barrel twist is 1-9 and not 1-7, the Sport barrel does not have the M4 contour, the Sport forearm does not have heat shields, the Sport trigger guard is one piece, and the Sport comes with Magpul rear sight and not a removable carry handle.

He didn't say the other m&p was the original sport, it could be one of the other models. You can check the website for differences if you know what model it is. It may have a 4150 barrel, midlength gas system etc depending on the model. They are all decent options imo

The original M&P Sport did not have the forward assist and dust cover, the Sport 2 has them and the original M&P has always had them

Thanks all, I purposely stayed away from the Sport(s) - all reliable rifles I'm sure (I'm a S&W guy, according to my firearms) but the first one didn't have the dust cover and forward assist. I know the second fixed this, but don't know what else was changed. Internet searches turn up contradictory responses - it's a popular line, so I wanted to reach out to those who know these models.

Good point, Everready - I'll look up the SN to clarify which iteration this is.

I believe the M&P 15 line is "part" mil-spec. Does anyone know if this is just for the furniture (i.e. stock, grip, hand guard) or if it includes some internals? Appreciate the help - this is my first venture into ARs. Wanted to snag one while the prices are good.

I'm searching but haven't been able to find a guide on S&W AR serial numbers - mine is SM 559XX
