Does anyone know where I can find a set of original replacement grips for a 1902 S&W M&P (round butt)? My father owns this gun and the black rubber grips where either damaged or missing when he acquired it. He is pretty old school and will not touch a computer so I am trying to find these for him for Christmas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Finding original black hard-rubber stocks could be difficult because they became hardened with age, and often cracked or chipped. However not all is lost. The basic frame was carried over into the .38 Hand Ejector, Model of 1905 and the same hard rubber stocks were used as late as 1946.

Modern black plastic duplicates can be purchased from: http://www.vintagegungrips.com/

Original S&W checkered walnut stocks for the 1905 H.E. round butt model are (or were) available from: www.e-gunparts.com their item No. 359110 (note that they might not come with a screw, but they probably have screws. Inquire by e-mail).

You might find original black hard-rubber stocks on e-bay, but be aware that prior to World War Two the stocks were individually fitted to, and serial numbered to, each individual frame. Therefore stocks that were previously fitted to another frame may not be a perfect fit on your father’s revolver.

Any stocks listed for a .38 1902, 1905 Hand Ejector or Military & Police (M&P) round butt revolver should work, but might require minor fitting.

Thanks for the reply and info. I ordered a replacement grip from Vintage Gun Grips. I got the S&W Hand Ejector .38 Revolver in Black. My father's gun is not the Hand Ejector model, but I am assuming that would matter for the grip. Also, excuse my ignorance but I haven't seen this gun and the grips they sent seem awfully small. Are the grips pretty small on this revolver?

I just want to make sure I got the right kind.

Thanks,

The Smith & Wesson 1902 Military & Police (M&P) Model was a hand ehector - the cylinder swings out to the left to load or eject the cartridges. It was built on S&W's K-frame, which today is called the Model 10.

These revolvers were chambered in .32-20 or .38 Special, and the correct cartridge is stamped on the left side of the barrel.

I believe that the correct Vintage stocks would be their size S11, but it might be advisable to e-mail the company for conformation. Their web page is confusing to say the least. Do be sure to also order a screw. Tell them you want stocks for a Smith & Wesson K-frame/Round Butt.

At the time S&W made a smaller frame (the I-frame) which preceeded today's J-frame, which were chambered in .32 S&W Long and .38 S&W (not Special). The stocks for these guns would be too small for the gun you have in mind if we are on the same wave length.

Yes, the stocks were smaller in those days because people often had smaller hands. Keep in mind that larger stocks made for today's K-frame/round butt revolvers will also fit the model 1902 Hand Ejector/Round butt.
