Greeting's Wolfy My Friend-

There is a thread running here at THR with several responses
that denounce the finish found on the Smith & Wesson 637.
Most all of them have too do with the finish "peeling" off
of the firearm? I've never owned a 637, so I'm certainly not an
expert. However, I have examined a "new model 60" in .357
magnum; and find it to be a quality piece, fabricated the same
as the "old model 60" from stainless steel without the use of
a clear coat. With that said, I would opt for the 60*.

*FootNote- even though I prefer the "old model 60" in .38 SPL.

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

Ala Dan I have been hearing about the finish problem also. Does S&W repair the gun if it happens?

rbert0005 the guns I listed are new and the model 10 you listed is a used price am I correct?

Wolfy,

Depends (what doesn't?). Mainly on this: Do you want to carry it in your pocket? If you do, then get an airweight (or airlite--mine is a 340PD, and I think it is the best available for this purpose by a good margin, assuming you're willing to pay for it and suffer through to learn to shoot it comfortably). If you don't want to pocket (or ankle) carry, then get the 60.

One more stipulation: if you want a pocket gun, seriously consider a hammerless 642 instead. The hammer has no place on a defensive snub-nose, IMHO, and its absence makes the 642 that much easier to pocket and unpocket reliably.

Yes it was a used one. It was about 90+% as well.

I keep looking at it, and may just have to come home with me one day.

Model 60

I have an old model 60 and with the current reputation of the S&W company I will never give it up and will pass it on to a member of my family.

Back When my 5 screw K-38 Masterpiece was made and the Bangor Punta company took over and simplified the pistols I developed the idea that when it comes to anything made by S&W then "Older is Better".

Wolfy,
For belt carry i would go with the 60 unless money is a big factor. The 60 weighs a few ounces more but it helps dampen the recoil of +P's. I have an older 60 (.38 no dash) that's had an action job, converted to D/A only, bobbed hammer, smoothed trigger, orange front sight insert and Hogue goncalo alves grips. it's much easier to shoot using +p's than my 642.

For pocket carry i would go with a 442 or 642.

go for the 638 body guard

The hammer cheeks allow reliable firing from within a pocket. Mine has the finish peel problem, and I could give a rip. The snub is simply accurate and fine:D
