Does anyone know how to interpret the markings on an old S&W revolver? I inherited my late father's J-frame S&W Mod 49 police service pistol. I've cleaned it up thoroughly and noticed some markings stamped at the bottom of the frame underneath the grip. On the right is a "G9" stamp. The left side has a "C" with a circle around it and a "J" with a triangle around it. There is also a number that is repeated on several other parts which I assume were used to keep the various bits together when it was assembled. I found that the stamp on the very end of the butt is the serial number.

Is there a good resource for finding out what these markings mean?

What you are seeing is various in-house inspectors' stamps that were made as the revolver was assembled. I'm unaware of any source that fully explains the codes, but you might ask S&W's customer Service Department.
