I have a S&W model 29-2 .44 mag serial # N7978XX I was told it was made about 1979. It is a different silver kind of color. I do not know if that means it is S/S or what. It has a 3/16" "SMITH & WESSON" on the left side of the bbl and ".44 MAGNUM" on the right side with "curily ques" as the best words I can come up with for a description of the engraving which covers all, but the top rib and lower ejector shroud. The trigger and rear sights are blue. with a non-blued part in the "U" shaped sight. 6 1/2" bbl or so. It has large wood grips that seem plain.

Can anyone tell me anything about this Smith please?

Serial number N-7978xx should date from 1980-81, falling within a range running from N-790001 to N-820000.

It may or may not be factory engraved. A factory letter confirming that it was would cost $30.00, but such confirmation would increase the value of the revolver much more then the cost of the letter.

Details on getting a letter can be found on Smith & Wesson's website at: www.smith-wesson.com

Does it look like this 29-2, except with a nickel finish?
