A shooting bud had this 44 Russian S&W Top Break at the Range. According to him, it was made in 1896, is a target model with non rebounding hammer. Apparently standard No 3's had a rebounding hammer, target shooters thought that was bad for target grade accuracy. Roy Jinks told him that the Diamonds on the cylinder and frame identify the reblue as a factory refinish.

The rear sight is adjustable for windage with the two screws, under the latch is a elevation adjustment screw.

I got to shoot it, the trigger is fantastic, and I was able to hit my 12” gong offhand at 65 yards. That is good enough for me.

The load was a light load of Unique with a Lead bullet. I assume it was a 246 grain.

Bud got this in 1983, before they became unaffordable.

Very nice. Now... see if you can talk him into loading up some BP cartridges and go find out what that gun was "Really" like when it was designed. Bet he'll give up on the Unique!!!

Like the old saying goes..When it comes to topbreaks..Smith & Wesson made the best!!!!!!

Foto Joe does have it right...

Have your friend load some up some rounds in 3f BP...and, I am confident he will not continue with 'UNIQUE'.

Nothing against 'UNIQUE', a fine propellent, to be sure...just, BP is so much nicer and more 'right-feeling' in anything of that era, or anything chamber a Cartridge of that era.

David Chicoine warns against shooting even light loads of smokeless in S&W topbreaks prior to about 1909. Says he has seen a lot of beat up guns that people dug out of closets and took up CAS with.

Bud had discussed the use of light smokeless loads with Mr. Jinks and for this year Mr. Jinks did not think light loads would cause problems. He did tell bud that if he wanted horsepower to find ballon head cases and use black powder.

Bud was using cut down 44 Magnum cases.

Something else, Bud said older S&W M10 grips will fit this topbreak. The grip frame was not changed.
