Sabotage of War Materials, copper theft

Had some folks in my little village decide they were going to remove the cable from the train signals. Fortunately, the municipals noticed before any cars with inattentive drivers got themselves scrapped. They, too, got caught when they tried to sell the stuff as scrap.

Things aren't looking too hot for the metal resource market...

"During wartime?" Did I miss something? Did Congress declare war at some point while I was asleep?

If you don't think we are at war why don't you go to Afghanistan with my grand son in the Army Airborne. You know, the one that just got back from Iraq a couple of months ago and left his sergeant and several friends behind.

I've never defended the killing of innocents, Jaholder. You know that. And if you don't, you should research before you try to slander.

I recently sold off some Ni containing metal at our plant. The scrap guy I talked to asked me how I wanted payment like he thought I would ask for cash. I can't do any crap like that.

I agree that it is hard to believe they didn't know what it was or couldn't find out. I bet they didn't question it until they got the bigger quantities. It sounds like they get to keep the copper though.

My Dad recently sold some old welding leads for quite a bit. I have an uncle who does pipeline welding and he said he has to keep an eye on his nice welding leads. They don't stay in the truck.

The only "contest" in which I am engaging is a rationality contest. I would be thrilled to have someone beat me in that contest. Because then I would be able to learn from him, and acquire and embrace more of what is true.

I thought you lost that contest with your long post on the previous page. :D
When rationality diverges from reality, it isn't really rational is it?

Copper theft is so rampant in the area that I live (people stealing copper drain pipes off of school, stealing large gauge copper wires from highway lights, stripping copper wire from unoccupied houses, etc), that state law requires someone to produce ID if bringing in more than 5lbs. And the scrap dealers are required by law to record their info. Since the law went into effect copper theft has gone down, but there are still renegade scrap dealers that will handle those transactions off the book. Some however have been bitten by undercovers posing as sellers with suspicious materials and the dealer getting busted for not taking down their info. The problem lies in that there is usually a couple of days lag time between when the copper is stolen, and the theft discovered, which gives the thieves time to get it sold before any alert goes out.

FWIW, Congress didn't pass the Iraq War resolution with a simple majority. They passed it with the required supermajority (i.e. 2/3 majority). That means that even most of the Dems were in on it. At this point it really doesn't matter if the War was constitutional or not because we can't 'un-invade' Iraq. Whatever...

As far as uses for 7.62x51 in the US Armed Forces there's the M240B/G (infantry), M240/C/E1 (tank coax), M14/M1 DMR, M21 and M24, GAU-2 Minigun, M60E3/E4 (Navy/Marines)...there's probably a few more that I'm forgetting.

Grandpas footstone was a navy ww2 commemorative.
It was brass or bronze with a black marble round insert that had etching
in it. The footstones text was raised letters.
It disappeared last year within a tight timeframe of a "parade" of sorts
that ended at the cemetary. Ours was not the only veterans footstone
to run off.

That's pretty low-class, and it's not just because I'm a veteran that I feel that way. We had some of that happen around here, too, in the northern part of the county. My prime suspects would be dopers from a certain big city not too far from those little towns.
But up here, illegal possession or sale of gravestones is a Class C felony, and entering or remaining in a cemetery or burial ground during hours of darkness is criminal trespass, a Class E (misdemeanor). Anyone caught swiping gravestones will probably want to be locked up so the deceased's family members can't come over to "have a talk" with the thief.

I talked with the 2 yardguys at the scrapyard I deal with.
They said that since there was more than one footstone missing,
it would be likely that the "materials" would be defaced with a grinder
or just completely melted up to something less identifiable.
The family has spoken about paying to have a replacement made,
but we decided it'd probably just dissapear again...
Thats got me thinkin...

I cant believe the stupidity of some people. That they didn't think that selling him the quantity that they had stolen and it would raise any red flags.

Truth of the matter is, people like that don't think of anything but their own greed. That's usually how they get caught.
If they had stuck to scrapping a bucket full every few weeks they could have probably kept doing this for the rest of their lives. Instead they decide to bring in a trailer full when they get greedy.

Automotive plants use big robotic spot welders which take copper tips that have to be replaced- several times a shift sometimes. They have drums full of them. Every now and then they would bust a guy who would have the habit of taking a pocketfull of them home every day. They estimate that he could make $20 a day just putting some junk in his pockets. $100/week tax free cash bonus. But all the scrap dealers in the area knew what the tips looked like, and if someone brought a bunch in regularly they knew who to call. Busted.

Copper wire is being stolen from retail stores such as Lowes and Home Depot at record rates. The thief then sells it to contractors who don't ask questions when offered wire at less than half what they pay from their legit suppliers.

Not all of us contractors are like, I have stuff offered to me all the time, I will not buy something I think is stolen.

I can't tell you how many times I've had materials or tools stolen from me. Your not just stealing stuff, your stealing my ablity to feed my family. I could never support some one that did that. heaven help you if I catch you doing it. I've seen more then one thief been almost beat to death on the job site, by dozens of tradesmen.

I also get around 1 call a month from people that have had some one break in and steal every bit of brass and copper they can get thier hands on. Some doing 10s of thousands in damage doing so. Infact I just got done doing one where the bill was $123, 418.24.

sign-YEAH_THAT.gif ; what TAB said. And I'm sure Battlespace meant "a certain few contractors." The kind of guys you probably wouldn't want working on your house, anyway.

I just had to go looking for this! Apparently from somewhere in Texas, and immortalized in The LawDog Files. ROFL.gif
