I got two new holsters recently. A Safariland 6377 for my M&P and a 6378 for my 229r.

The M&P works ever so nicely in the first. Compared to a thumb strap or the Blackhawk finger button, I just love how the ALS lock works. Working it feels more natural than the BH CQC latch, and there's no dangly strap to interfere with reholstering like a typical leather holster has.

Now, I get around to trying out the 6378 and my Sig. It's a little snug, but it slides in and locks into place. I go to pull it out... and no movement. I jam it back in, wiggle it around, and try to remove it again. Nothing. Oh Crap. The lock is not releasing.

I can fix this. I unscrew the bolt that holds the lock mechanism in place and pull on the gun. Again, no movement. Oh Double Crap.

A few horribly annoying minutes later I figure it out. There is a tension block in the bottom of the holster. The front surface is shaped Just Perfectly to engage in the rail slot on the frame of my 229r. Unfortunately, not having been designed to catch anything, there is no release lever. Argh. I take out that screw too, and after a little 'encouragement' the gun and tension block finally pop out.

Looking at the label, it says Sig 228 / 229. No mention of 229R. Damn. Well... maybe... I drop a 228 in and it locks and releases just like it's supposed to. Seeing as how the holster is made to accomodate the wider 229 slide, the 228 kind'a wiggles around in it. Not Pleasing! Double Argh!

I still haven't talked to Safariland about it, but I'm seriously disappointed. I love the way this system works on my M&P. I was really looking forward to this one working properly too.

I always hate it when I buy something and some minor difference in models makes it useless.

Unfortunately, holsters are pretty weapon specific. Since that holster does not say that it will fit the 229 railed version your only real option is trying to return it. Unless you can somehow modify the tension block to not catch on the rail.

Another 1/8 or 1/16 on the front of the tension block would have solved this. I'll give Safariland a call soon to ask about it. Maybe they have a differently shaped block for the rail model? If not, someone may have an unexpected gift this Christmas...

LOL! I did the *exact* same thing with the *exact* same holster. I have two now. One for my non-railed 229, and one for my 229R.

Safariland is usually pretty good about returns. I'm lucky and have a big cop-shop in town so I can try before I buy. It's saved me a few times on stuff like that. I like the ALS as a standalone security method, such as in the 6377/6378.

However I dislike it as an added security method, since they stick it with the SLS holsters. I don't find disengaging the SLS hood, then going back to the ALS all that natural. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. I really like the draw stroke of a thumbreak holster. Blade-techs new WRS holsters intrigue me as they seem to have the same draw stroke we a convetional thumbreak. Something like that coupled with Safarilands frame jack (rock back to release, such as the 6280), would make me a happy man.
