Took advantage of a quiet moment at home to organize the m&p drawer... and got a few pictures along the way... I have a few more mags stashed in vehicles and several other holsters. I didn’t buy all these mags... actually I think I only bought 2.. the rest came with other guns I bought and resold keeping the extra mags selling the pistol with only 2. I prefer gen1 over the 2.0 ... 2.0 stock trigger is better but not as tunable and I dislike the detent in the slide catch.
Top pic, top to bottom:
#1M&p compact gen1 .40 with storm lake 9mm conversion barrel. Hiviz front sight. Talon grip tape. Apex trigger and forward set seat.
#2 M&p 2.0 9mm - no mods (wife’s request) other than hiviz front sight.
#3. -my favorite and most used... m&p gen1 .40 full size with apex forward set seat and flat faced trigger. Silencerco threaded 9mm barrel talon grip tape and stipples backstrap. Undercut trigger guard. Dawson narrow hiviz front sight. Filed and polished slide catch. Tlr-1
#4 m&p gen1 VTac .40 with factory 9mm barrel. Night/day sights. 2.0 backstrap. Apex FSS and flat faced trigger.
#5 m&p 2.0 5” .40 with a kkm.357 sig and factory 9mm barrels. Apex fss and flat trigger.

I’d still like a couple more 357sig barrels. Need to undercut more trigger guards and grind off the beavertails from the gen1 4.25’s

There are several other good guns out there.. Glock, cz, the HK vp9 and sig have my utmost respect... but the m&p has everything I want in a pistol and shoots better for me than the competitors so I’ve invested accordingly.

There is something to be said about staying with the same platform for familiarity. I like the M&P just fine, but since they don't offer a 10mm option and Glock does I've stayed with Glock.

I like M&P’s as well. I have a full size 2.0 in .45, a 9MM 2.0 Compact, a 9MM Shield EZ, a 9MM Shield 1.0, and N M&P Bodyguard .380. All have manual safeties. I like carrying with a safety.

But my usual carry gun is a Ruger LC9S with a safety. Same manual of arms as the Shield but lighter. I considered the Sig 365 with the safety but with the extra 3 rounds it’s slightly heavier than the Ruger. I might still get one but when it comes to carry every ounce matters to me.

I own 1.... 1.5.... 2.5... I guess.

IE M&P M2.0 Compact 4" .40 S&W with a spare 4.25" 9mm barrel and a (technically M&P) .45 Shield.

Currently considering adding an M2.0 Subcompact 9x19mm.

I really like the M&P and Shield ergonomics, but I don’t shoot them all that well, which is a bummer. They feel better in the hand to me than any other striker fired semi auto I have handled.

I do wish there was an m&p 10mm... I’d be all over that. But I I have plenty of revolvers to fulfill my big boom needs.

I like M&P’s as well. I have a full size 2.0 in .45, a 9MM 2.0 Compact, a 9MM Shield EZ, a 9MM Shield 1.0, and N M&P Bodyguard .380. All have manual safeties. I like carrying with a safety.
.
It is nice that one has the option of a safety... personally I don’t like them but to each his own. My 5” 2.0 had a safety when I bought it but now called s&w customer service and they sent me some free safety delete plugs.
I’ve had a couple of shields (one 9mm and one .40) but found that I didn’t really care for them... side by side comparison with my compact showed me that the shield didn’t really have anything to offer me so they went away. I’d rather pick up an extra compact .

I’m just the opposite. I’ve got a couple of Shields and like them so much that I am jonesing to get a bigger model.

I prefer gen1 over the 2.0 ... 2.0 stock trigger is better but not as tunable and I dislike the detent in the slide catch.

Can you elaborate on the detent?

I have a M&P9c that's so 1.0 that Im pretty sure it has the 1:18 twist..... and a Shield too in 1.0.

I've been thinking of maybe the 2.0 version of the 9c or possibly the 4" compact .... but Ive already invested in 12 rnd mags so....

M&P has grown on me. My pocket gun of choice is a BG380 and the Shield has really been a winner for me.

I've kinda gotten out of the duty size 9mm auto market, gravitating toward wheel guns and single stack CCW pieces.

That said I think I would go M&P over the other big names in the industry if I were to select another full size pistol.

Same reason I haven't gone 100% m&p. So far there isn't a line that has every single style and size I want. The m&p is only 1 model away..... Oh for a 10mm.....

The gen1’s have a slide catch spring pushing the release down which is overcome by the stronger magazine spring pushing up when the follower engages the catch on an empty mag; the catch Naturally wants to be in the disengaged (down) position so a light brush with the thumb or a hearty tap when seating the fresh mag will drop the slide.
The 2.0’s have a spring and detent under the slide catch which is biased toward the lock position; the catch Naturally wants to be engaged (slide locked back) and requires either a much stronger thumb ( to overcome the spring/detent as well and the friction of the catch on the slide) or else an “over the top” two hand release. The thumb release is particularly difficult if you’re working the gun left handed have 2+” of stamped metal flexing.

I’ve heard gossip that the gen1 design was intentional to be conducive to bumping the slide down upon a seating a fresh mag... but s&w got so many calls from people thinking that it was a defect that they got tired of explaining the intent of the design and decided to just “fix” it. (/hearsay)

I brush the contact point of my gen1 catches with emery cloth so that they reliably lock back as well as dropping the slide upon inserting a mag. I still train to go for an over the top release if the slide doesn’t drop (hardly ever) but I sure get tired of all the extra movement/time i spend on mag changes with a 2.0
On my 5” 2.0 I did remove the spring and detent from the slide catch in an attempt to replicate the gen1 but it isn’t the same.

Hope some of that makes sense.

It does. Thanks for all the details.

I dont think that would bother me but it never crossed my mind.

They still offer the 1.0 compact so thats an option but the 4" keeps drawing me back. I don't really need another 3.5"

This is not normally like me but I've even been playing with the idea of the 4" and chop the grip so I use all my 12 round mags.

@danez71 have you tried using full size mags in your compact? Either with the xgrip adapter or let it stick out a bit? To me Thais is a big advantage that the compact has over the shield. I carry mine with a 12 round mag for concealability but my reloads are always 17 or 28 round mags.

I have not done that but I generally agree.

I got my M&P9c about 11-12 yrs ago and carried it daily. Right now it's still my goto gun before the shield for most everything most everytime.

I think I want the little bit extra site radius of the 4". When I shoot my BHP, which isn't much the last several years, I appreciate the extra site radius.

I've even half thought about the 4" compact and chop the grip to accept all my 12 round mags. With the pinky extention it, its practically a full size grip for me and with out it I'm still ok and it conceals a little better. I probably wouldn't do it but it's a half thought.

M&P's are awesome, especially the 2.0 versions. I've got two of them and they're great pistols.
