Saiga, Any good?

I believe I'll be picking up one of these Saigas very soon. The ones I'm looking at already have a pistol grip incorporated into the stock so I see no need for any conversion. Maybe a trigger job but not right away. So PLEASE let me know when these mags are available! PM is ok...

:D

I wish you were building 20-round .223 magazines as well. Then you really would be the coolest dude ever.

Roscoe, your best bet is to put in a feed ramp, hit the well with a dremel a little bit and convert it to take the Bulgarian poly waffle .223 mags from K-Var. They work great once you've done that.

Correia, I have read all about the dremel conversion, but I want to keep it able to feed the 10-rounders in case I move to an unfriendly state. Also, when the Cuban paratroopers invade and I have to defend my home single-handedly, I want to have total confidence in the thing feeding perfectly. Not everyone has had total success going hog-wild with the dremel, at least according to the Saiga-12 forum.

I have seen an advertisement for 30-round Saiga magazines that are made by Surefire(?) at this site:
https://www.gilbertsguns.com/index.php?request=main.viewproduct&productid=3234&categoryid=507

but I have no idea if they are for real. I am sort of waiting for the report back from some Saiga-12 members.

yes but when are these 20 round mags going to be available? Or is that classified information and you'll have to kill me if you tell me? :D

I'll probably want 4 whenever you're ready...

Roscoe, I got one of the Surefire magazines. They do seem to work fine, but they are expensive. They are basically an East German Weiger magazine that has had some welding done to the front end. I can get more of them if you would like. I believe they are like $50 off the top of my head.

280, I'm just waiting for a few more bits and pieces. I'm hoping to have them shipping in September. Originally I was shooting for August, but there has been some hold up on the followers.

Just keep me in the back of your mind! I think the new rifle may arrive home tomorrow. (But THEN no more new guns till I get a Dillon 550!) (I swear!):D

Well, ok, unless the FIL's guns suddenly come through, but no other ones...

Well, I guess I will have to take a couple anyway. I'll PM you. It would hardly be a hobby if it were not preposterously and unendingly expensive. I should take up restoring British sports cars next.

Saiga's are good stuff.

The Saiga was my first centerfire rifle. Got a 16" 7.62x39 for $225, which was a real steal around these parts. I think I've cleaned it once since I've had it and it has never given me a problem. Quite accurate as well. My friend likes shooting it more than my AR15. Too bad ammo has almost doubled in price for it (used to get a 1000 rds for ~$80)

A few questions for all these people saying take a dremel to your rifle for hi-caps to fit. Unless things have changed, dont you have to put a certain amount of american parts into the rifle before you are allowed to do this??? That is what used to be the case when I wanted to modify mine to take hi-caps so I never did it. Something about Bush Sr's 922r. If the rules changed, that would be great. I dont really care to put a pistol grip and all on there, just want to leave it stock with hi-caps.

So letta brotha know, a-aight?!?:neener:

Well, as the ten round magazines are around $30 each, I guess that isn't bad. LOL.

One of my local dealers has one of the .223 Saigas, lightly used (he used it in a 3-Gun match and sighted-in the scope he used for the match beforehand) for $300. It seemed like a really nice gun and I'm considering it, though the work I'd have to do to convert it to use AK magazines is a bit intimidating.

Janos, my regular price on the new .223s is $290, and I'm doing a labor day sale that will probably knock another $25-$30 off of them.

Suweeet! I don't think mommy and daddy politician will let me play with that one though. :(

No joy today...

Talked to the shop this A.M. and decided to wait till during the week because getting approval on the weekend is hit or miss. No sense in driving all the way there if I can't take it with me the same day. Stay tuned, there'll be pictures. ;)

To zero: Yes you should put on some aftermarket parts. but hey, we're not talking about dremeling any part of the weapon , just some 10 to 15 dollar mags, even if you don't use them right away, get a couple to practice with .
Allways start slowly, and test acouple of times as you go along. remember , you cant' put back on metal. once you get em figured out, it takes about 5 minutes to do one. i do think the E. german ones with the big rib down the back, and the little hole in the front top of the mag catch, is the easiest to do . just screw down a little metal screw in the top of that front catch, and waa, laa,! there is your bullet guide/jump.

Thanks, Correia, but, though that's a good price, I would rather pay a little more and support a local store.

Janos, I'm not just a dealer, I'm one of RAAC's eight distributors, so I sell to other dealers primarily. So have your local dealer send me an FFL, and I can fax him my price list for Saigas.
