My brother recently gave my son a Savage 110 in 270 caliber. I put a set of rings on it and found that the scope would not fit between the rings. Do I have to buy a set of offset rings for this rifle?

Is the scope tube too big or too small? Scopes usually come in either a 1" tube or a 30mm tube. If the scope tube is too big to fit in the rings, then you probably have a 30mm scope and need 30mm rings. If it's too small, then you need 1" rings.

The scope tube is right. 1" tube and rings. The problem is when I set the scope in the rings, the adjustment ring contacts the rear ring and the "bell" on the fron objective sits inside the front ring.

This is not a compact scope, I used to have it mounted on my Rem 700 Long action. I also tried to mount another scope and had the same problem. The 1" tube part of the scope is just not long enough to fit between the rings.

IMO, the best way to correct this problem and any problem like it in the future if you (or your son) decide to put a different scope on it with a different length main tube is to replace the base (and rings) with a one-piece Weaver/Picatinny rail base. By doing this, you can place the rings in any position along the length of the main tube.

Offset rings, as you've noted, will work. Never liked the way they look though myself.

A possible solution without looking at the current setup is some two piece bases have the ring/base interface not in the center of the base. By turning the off center base around so the interface is closer to the other base, you could get around the problem. Note, though, that the base may then overhang over the ejection port and may hinder the existing case/cartridge.

Thanks hksw. :)

I've never used a one piece base before. I didn't know that the rings would adjust on the base like that. That sounds like a good solution to me.

you have the flat steel base that screws onto the side of the receiver?weaver makes a good base for this setup.mine came with the flat steel base which wouldnt accept a scope because of the width of the turrents also which i promptly replaced with a weaver design that is a 2 piece setup.

Ah. In that case, the one piece weaver or picatinny slotted base is what you need to get. I have a Savage 10FP chambered in 308, myself, and I use a Ken Farrell one-piece base and Burris Signature Zee Rings.
