A local shop has one of these on the rack sporting a vintage Weaver for $500.

I have seen these in the past and really like the heavy barrel and style of stock. Seem to be pretty rare.

Its basically a heavy barreled target rifle set up for high power steel shooting.

Is $500 a good deal? Seems like a good value for a “semi sporter”.

I’m very tempted to pick it up. I assume it is very hard to burn out a 308 even for a match shooter. I would be very disappointed if it turned out to be a 10lb 2” gun though.

I haven't even seen one I know they stopped making that model. The long action in a heavy is a plus can load bullets long and still fit magazine, I had to do that witth my 111 243 win. Loaded 100 gr bullets to 2.700 inches to get decent groups. It wouldn't shoot any of the factory ammo that I tried and I tried a lot.
As hookeye said not to hard to rebarrel and can be done inexpensively.

I'm going to assume that it's probably a pre-1989, which means that it's a 'first gen' short action (there is different action screw spacing for the pre-1989 guns, the post-1989 pre-Accutrigger guns, and the modern Accutrigger guns). If you ever intend to replace the stock or use a one piece scope base, it woild be important to know which specific action you’re looking at - you’ll probably need to dig a little deeper into the model nomenclature and serial number.

I like the stock and the gun comes with rings and a weaver.

Were savages of that era as accurate as current production?

Well the model is very good and so is the .308. Is the Weaver a "T" series silhouette scope , or a run of the mill low power scope. The "T " series scopes are worth a couple hundred and 10x to 16x fixed is great for your uses. I the sight a Weaver type mounts, which are very good and universal . To be truthfull $500 is a bit high unless has a Target Weaver on it and the gun exceptional condition. $400 with a T series and great shape would be fair . If a hunting type cheaper Weaver then even less, just to be honest . I see older Savages with no scopes in great shape all the time for $350 or less .

It is, if it has a quality Weaver scope $500 out the door would be good. These are very kewl rifles, I just got an old serjes J target one with a Burris 10x scope for $300
