Savage 300......Share some stories or insight

I have an old savage 99 in savage 300 and I havent shot a deer this seaon with it, but I was curious about the round since its not very mainstream yet there are a lot of guns out there chambered in it. what is its effective range and are there any bennifits to it?why did oldtimers like it so much?

By the way Remington chambered its 700 classic in it this year which I thought was interesting.

I don't own a .300 Savage, but a friend's brother has a Savage 99 in that caliber.
He loads his own ammo for it, and is happy with it as a deer rifle.
I think the .300 would be much more popular if the U.S. hadn't adopted the 7.62 x 51/.308 as a military cartridge.
