Savage 300

300 Savage is a cool round, but it has fallen out of favor. You're going to be looking at something custom. If not full custom, at least a rebarrel of a Savage or Remington.

Don't know about a current bolt action in 300 Savage, but them old remington model8's and model 81's in that flavor are wicked cool if ya can find one.

As stupid as it is, I dislike the .308, and like the .300 Savage.....

Personally I'd try dig up a remington 722 in said .300
Or you can build one easy enough should you be inclined.
I’ve been looking for one for a little while, they just don’t seem to be available locally. There ar3 a few on gunbroker, but they are kinda expensive, and I don’t like the idea of paying that much when I can’t pick up the gun and inspect it.

As far as building one, what would be involved in that. The only building I’ve done is with an AR.

I'm no .308 win fan.
Like the .300 Savage just to be different.

Bolt gun?
Remington did the 700 classic in .300 Sav. A few yrs back Savage did it in a stainless synth (anniv model ?).
Prices are not cheap.

There were 760 and 7600 pumps in .300 sav......the latter a special run.
Think 300 in .300 Sav and 250 in .250 Sav,

Cheapest way to go is to get a .308 bolt face Rem 783 or Savage 110 (whatever they call them now)........and just have somebody chamber a new bbl and screw it on.

I keep looking for a Stainless Sav.....116? to redo.

The .300 is a fine round, but I can see no practical post-.308win reason to get a rifle chambered as such for hunting unless you already own an M99, M81 or other and want to use the same load in both. There is perhaps a tiny niche in IHMSA silhouette, where the reduced case capacity can work in the shooters favor, or in the case of rebarrelling an older weaker action such as Mauser 95 or MS1903 to prevent full power .308 from being used. I suppose a .300 Sav in a longer magazine with a fast twist, really heavy bullets and a suppressor could be interesting too.

Handloaded, the .308 can absolutely be loaded to ballistically equal the .300 Sav with no noticeable loss in accuracy or consistency (I do exactly this for my wife's .308 Savage M11) with near infinitely more loading options in terms of bullet profile, weight and length, load data and brass availability. The Savage cartridge is somewhat handicapped with "long" bullet profiles due to the short magazines, short neck and limited case capacity. It's at it's best with old fashioned (to some, not me) 150 to 165 flat based spitzers or the 180 round nose.

A build will be significantly more expensive than a new or used rifle in .308 with little or no gain in performance, but it's your money, so if you really want a .300Sav, have at it, the reamers are out there and anything that is/was ever offered in .308 will make an acceptable donor with no modification of bolt face or magazine required. I'm sure you can find a gunsmith that will do the work. For my money, I'd shop for a good Rem 722, a vintage Mauser or MS, or one of the Rem 700 classics chambered in this round, in fact I saw a matched pair of Rem 722s this weekend, one in .300, one in .250.

My LGS gets the Federal blue box and Hornady Leverevolution in .300 Savage.
So does the shop next town over.
This before HP rifle became legal for deer.
Enough old timers going out of state request it I guess.

From 1928 to 1940, Savage made the model 40 and 45 Super Sporter. They made them in 30-30, 250-3000, 300 Savage, and 30-06. They are ugly to some but they shoot great. The price isn't too bad either. If your made of money, Remington made a classic 700 in the early 90's and you can usually find them in the original box on Gunbroker for 600-900$$

Ammo cost is higher and no, one can't run to Walmart to get .300 Sav ammo.
These are nothings IMHO.
Esp with the internet.........can order stuff pretty easily and even find commercial reloaders if needed.

Too many think the .308 Win is the bestest thing evar!
Esp new to rifle or deer hunting folks.

Kinda nice to show them other stuff works fine.

I have a 760 in .35 rem, so proly won't get another in .300 Sav.
Had a 99EG, but think if I get another, a featherweight w factory D&T.

Proly should have modified my ol EG for how little I had in it.
But it was 1935 and made it that far without being changed, so let er go to somebody that wanted one to be left "as is".

Could one set back and rechamber a Savage 340 in 30-30? it's needs 0.052" setback to clean up a 30-30 chamber. Cheap as chips and, relatively, a lot of rifle for it, albeit an underwhelming trigger. 300 Savage in a 340 Savage? Cool.

Not sure the single locking lug would be up for it.o_O

Ah, well. I had given that approximately zero thought. So, good point.

But the 340 was offered in 222 Rem (50,000 psi) whereas the 300 Savage is max 47,000 psi(and the 30-30, 42,000 psi). So, is the issue bolt thrust, with the much larger base of the 300 Savage than the 222 Rem?

Off the top of my head the 300 was not offered in the 8 only the 81. Really with just a few changes they are the same.

But I doubt we will ever see the likes of the 8/81 or the savage 99 ever offered again.....they are just too expensive to make. To me the 99 is the best looking lever gun, but I know that view is not common.

I have an 8 in 30 remington, and an 81 in 300 savage. The 30 is much nicer to shoot....both guns have a little bit of meat to them but the 300 feels like it is really pushing the gun to its limits....to the point where it is just a tad un pleasant to shoot....I have not rolled my own 300 yet, but I do tend to down load in the older guns.....300 is out there, several boxes on Bass Pro's shelf.....After I get a supply of brass I will try some of my own.
