I will soon have a Savage Model 99 CD in 308 Win. I already have a Marlin 1894 SS in 44 Mag. I'm not taken with the Marlin and have already promised to sell it to another THR member if and when I decide to let it go.

My question is, "Is there anything the Marlin in 44 mag can do that the 308 can't?" IMO the 308 will be more effective than the 44 on just about any game animal. BTW, I have these guns to hunt hogs and whitetail deer. Is there any real reason to have both?

With the Marlin and some .44 light loads, you can use it for home defense in an emergency.

You can also re-enact "Tombstone" when you get the urge at the range..... :)

I nearly bought a 20" .308 Savage 99 as my first rifle, but came back with the money and it was gone.... so I bought a No.4 Mk1 and was quite happy! You're still one lucky guy... I'd be happy with either of your leverguns.

Forget "Tombstone"...with the Savage you can reenact "Dawn of the Dead!"

Anyway, the .308 will obviously best the .44 Mag. in just about anything you care to name. I'd much rather have the Marlin for home defense, but for hunting or even general SHTF, the Savage will do well.
