Filed 1-5-2016, approved 4-8-2016 via efile. Now I can finally assemble the .300 Blackout with a 10" barrel and AAC Cyclone supressor. Excited!

Excellent!

Gotta put up some pictures when it's done.

It's always a good feeling when you get a stamp back. :)

I filed my Form 1 for a 300 BLK on 1-4-16 and got approved 4-7-16. At least they're consistent! I went with a 9.5" barrel and am still waiting on my Form 4 for a Specwar 762. Already got the 300 BLK SBR assembled and ready to head to the range though!

So a quick question, I've heard yea and nay on having to mark the lower with the trust name.....is that law or just over exaggeration?

'Tis the law. Long story short, while Aero is the manufacturer of the lower you used, you are the maker of the SBR you currently posses. Makers must engrave their name, location, model, serial number and caliber on the SBR's. It just happens that the ATF allows you to use the engravings that already exist for most of that... But it still lacks your (or your trust's) name and location.

Those engravings can be made on the barrel if you feel like it.

I thought Efile was down?

Did you file and get it approved via Efile?

Be careful if you put it on the barrel in the case of say an AR15. Most people have their SBR lower and swap out different uppers on it. Think you need to have it engraved on the receiver for that.

I had mine engraved pretty small so it's barely noticeable. (Can still read it fine with the naked eye). Just Trust name and city, state if it's an existing firearm you made it from.

Edit: Aim1 - efile has been up for quite awhile unless this was a recent thing in the last couple days. You can only e-file form 1's though, the form 4's never came back up.

It has to be on the weapon somewhere visible. Doesnt need to be on the lower but most people do that to make swapping uppers easier. I usually have mine done on the bottom of the mag well lip and then blackened $50 from Veritas Machine is money well spent. Also remember what everyone forgets to do.... Engrave the caliber too if your lower is marked multi and its not stamped on the barrel in a conspicuous location..

Mark the trust name. Lowers are about the cheapest part of the gun any more. Always modify the cheapest part.

E-File is ALWAYS down on Wednesday. God Forbid a government website could function every day of the week.

While being the cheapest part, it is also the serialized part. If you had to replace the lower you could no longer have less than a 16" barrel

True. But I think yugorpk's point is that unless you have a collectible lower receiver, it being the cheapest part, you might as well engrave it. You're not really "ruining" it since it's so cheap anyway.

On the other hand, while you can engrave barrels, and some folks do, they then have to engrave EVERY barrel on EVERY short upper they want to use. So that's a greater expense. And a barrel can cost quite a bit more than a lower, and you can easily re-sell a barrel, and a buyer might not want it if it has your trust info engraved on it.

I say: to each his own. Either option works, and different people will have different reasons to do each.

My first SBR was a Colt, so I have engraved both of the barrels I use with it. My next one was a 10-22 that was a gift from my FIL so I pulled the original barrel and engraved the short, threaded replacement. I have another AR lower in-process, but it's a Spike's so I plan on engraving it.

If for some reason I ever have to sell one of those barrels I will just chuck it in the lathe and turn off .005" or so.

The S/N is on the form 1 or 4; whether you engrave the lower or not, the lower is the SBR.

As Aaron Baker pointed out, if you intend to swap uppers around, engraving the lower makes the most sense.
