Is there any advantage or disadvantage in the length of a rifle scope with the same power?

The clarity of the image from a scope is going to be dependent on the quality of the glass, coatings, the optical design of the scope and the precision that the optical elements are kept in alignment.

I do not believe there is any direct correlation between the length of a scope and the quality of the image it produces.

All things being equal a shorter scope will probably be lighter which is usually considered desirable.

The objective lens size and quality of glass are the only things that I consider when buying a scope. Can't tell you if length makes a difference other than weight and to me quality is what I go for.

lenth may matter if you need the scope to set back for full eye relief, ruger # 1,s come to mind along with long action bolt actions.

Using a longer tube, the manufacturer could increase focal point resulting in a very precise focus, but you will lose depth of focus. That means if you’re hunting and an animal is approaching you’ll be fiddling with your AO (or side focus knob) instead of simply tracking it.

Of course the scope would need to be designed that way and a longer scope does not immediately equate to a longer focal point, only that it’s possible. Designers understand their audience (hunters or target shooters) and design optics to suit typical needs.

For most purposes it is weight savings and eye relief as previously mentioned that determine which length is advantageous.
