I have a Marlin 336 with the standard Weaver 3-cross slot mount. I bought a compact scope, but found out that the spacing is too tight on the scope to reach the Weaver cross slots. I can't find a suitable Weaver rail to fit the Marlin 336 and this scope. I have at most 2.75 inches between rings centers on the scope.

Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks!

What is the space between the base? It sounds that it is wider than the space that you have on your scope. One way to solve the problem is to get one of the "Extension Top mount ring" that weaver has, and mount it backward.

Weaver's part number is 49090/49091. However, you need to check to make sure that the dimension will work for you.

You can send a question to Weaver and ask here... http://www.weaver-mounts.com/ask.asp

Is the base steel or aluminium? You might try cutting a new slot at the proper spacing.

My nickname isn't Bubba but we do spend a lot of time in the shop together. :p

On my Marlin I cut a new slot with a file to fit a red dot scope. A new base is only $7.00 What do you have to loose? Go slow, check fit often.

Yes, the Weaver bases are aluminum, so it's no trouble to simply file a new cross-slot where you need it. A buddy of mine (who obviously has more time on his hands than I do! :D ) actually converted one of those bases to a pseudo-Picatinny rail by cutting Picatinny-spec. slots at the correct spacing all the way down the base. He claims it's in case he wants to mount a weapon-light behind his scope and have a long-range searchlight... :D
