Scopes with small eye bell?

Yep, that's exactly what's going on. I think I'm going to grab one of those Weavers and gain that little bit, because I'm not in the mood to modify the bolt handle any further. The previous owner had a set of low rings on it! No idea what scope he had, but I think those scopes from the '70s were a little more compact.
Could have been a TV view, those were usually a little smaller

can you post some photos, i have mounted a lot of scopes on mausers and don't have much trouble. i do have a bunch off different bases and ring styles.

my sav 340/840s require a small bell scope. the anniversary weaver has great optics, the 70s/80s scopechief (bushnells) are smaller also. the 1-3 weavers are smaller and also a real burris compact is a small bell scope. just some other models to keep an eye out for. dc

ps what is up with weaver currently (drain comment)

Okay, called Weaver, got the diameter. The rep told me It is a little smaller than everything else I could find. He said it was 38mm. I'll measure for real when it gets here. I did order the 2-10x38 Classic V from Natchez. It was on sale and they had a 10% off on top of that, so I feel like I did okay. I needed a scope anyway. And all the reviews say that this is a good scope. Some of you helped in another thread I did asking for good options for $150ish, and this is the rifle for which that scope was intended, but the scope (Minox) got kyped for my bull barrel AR. And yes, I like it :D

I'm trying to justify my expenditure, can you tell?

Also, it seems to me that Weaver is not going to be around much longer. These scopes have been discontinued, from all I can tell. I think Natchez had them on sale just to liquidate them.

My approximeters said 1.445 or so on the diameter of the bell. Two inch micrometer says 1.4956. However, I don't have a standard for the micrometer. So, while the approximeters are less precise, they may be more accurate in this case. Thirty-eight millimeters comes out to 1.49606 inches.

It is just perfect. It doesn't seem like much, but those .050 inch or so (divided by two for the radius is only .025 but it) really matters! The bolt handle just barely cannot touch now. And, I was able to use my low rings! Very happy.

I turned a lapping bar and lapped my scope rings, and now all I have to do is make up some ammo and go shoot it! Was hoping to do that today, but I don't think I'll be able to do that all today, so I might have to go shoot tomorrow after church.

Large eyepieces with large eye lenses can give a large apparent-field-of-view. To get a large AFoV with a smaller eye lens, a shorter eye-relief is necessary and there is a practical limit to that because of recoil.
