Many people will contact (Email, phone call, fax, snail mail, facebook etc) their elected officials and let them know how they feel and think about various issues that are going on in the world. Sometimes to voice their support for or against some current issue. Including but not limited current bills under consideration. They also request of them that certain bills get introduced for future laws. All of this sometimes has no impact, sometimes this has a huge impact on influencing the elected official to take a certain action.

When cases are petitioned with SCOTUS various groups as well as certain individuals can file briefs in support of either the Petitioner or the Respondant requesting SCOTUS to accept or deny the petition.

What is virtually unheard of is US Citizens contacting SCOTUS.

So my question is simple. What effect if any would it have on SCOTUS if they received not just a few contacts, such as letters, but litterly millions of letters of which were either requesting a petition to be heard or denied.?

While i would find it rather easy for them to ignore a few thousand letters of request one way or the other. I would find it very hard for them to ignore millions of letters coming in constantly over a short period of time. (Think of the scene in "Miracle of 34th street") Human nature being what it is. We are all human, and id find it hard pressed for it not to sit in the back of their minds during their conference times when they are discussing whether or not to grant cert or deny. Even so that doesn't mean that they would take those letters seriously or not.

I like the idea, but I know how it would work. Deep pocket left wing individuals would finance an operation involving a copier, postage stamp machine, and TV ads to support their cause, and when the mail arrives they would find a way to get photos of the mail to use as propaganda against us.

I would not even waste your time with the effort.

Judges are very careful to maintain the appearance of impartiality. That includes making sure that they are not improperly influenced by communications from folks that are not party to the litigation before them.

The Supreme Court has rules governing how information is to be presented to the Justices. One of those rules allows for the Judges to receive "Amicus Curie" briefs on issues before them. But such briefs must be prepared by lawyers that have been admitted to practice before the court, and be agreed to by the parties, or where the court have granted leave to submit them.

If you were to submit materials to the court, other than above, expect a polite form letter response telling you that your correspondence has been committed to the "round file" without being seen by the Justices.

Thats assuming that our letter writing Campain would be all snail mail, and a organized contact plan.

I wasnt going too. Like i said i doubt a few letters even a few thousand letters emails etc would have any effect. If it was going to have any effect it would take millions. While they might not see any of those letters. They would undoubtly hear about the amount of mail being received. But i think your probably right, even then they would not be told what case those million letters were for, or if they were asking for cert or denial on those cases.
