I know the 'do you carry a spare mag/why' question has been worn out. So my question is a little different ( I hope).

Do you carry the same style ammunition in your secondary mag as you do in the gun? ex- 230gr fed hydrashoks in both. I carry the FHS in my gun, but plain ol' 230 gr fmjs in the secondary mag. Here are my thoughts: I carry the secondary mag not so much for extended firefights, but to clear malfs. That being the case, if I have to jet the primary mag to clear some sort of smurfup , then I REALLY need something to go my way, and I figure to drop my odds of a second malfunction by using the hardball. Just my thoughts, but I'd like to hear from the more experienced guys/gals, and from newer carriers with newer ideas.

Second mag gets FMJ for the reason you mention and by the time you are reloading everyone is behind cover so penetration is needed.

Winchester ranger talons in all mags. They have good penetration through barriers due to the reverse taper jacket, so i don't see the advantage of FMJ in my second mag.

Pistol mags, no, but it is a good idea depending on your needs. The

spare ammo on the SG are slugs to back up the buckshot for more

penetration and range.

A good topic for discussion. I load Speer Gold Dot hollow points in my carry gun, and put Federal EFMJ in the second mag. At home the bedside revolver is loaded with Federal Hydra-Shock and the speedloader is loaded with same.

Well, I think most non-L/E who lawfully carry a defense handgun will probably carry whatever they desire, although they will have hopefully made an informed decision after sufficient reseach and consideration ... and most L/E will either do the same, if it's permitted, or else carry whatever they're required to carry by departmental restriction ...

Personally, I think carrying different ammunition in different magazines, or carrying different ammunition within the same magazine of a defensive pistol, isn't something that merits a lot of consideration.

After all, when it comes to most recorded armed encounters involving both L/E and non-L/E, the "0-6 foot/3 second" rule of thumb still seems to prevail, statistically-speaking, when weapons are actually fired ... and remember, that approx 70% of THOSE close range armed encounters occur in situations involving diminished light conditions.

Fast, close, probably in "less than ideal" lighting, and probably when you're not expecting it ... or else you'd have run the other way and simply not BEEN THERE, right? ;)

There are quite a few other important things to consider, train and prepare for ... than what ammunition is, or isn't, carried in a spare magazine.
