For a while I have had a Sig Romeo 5 which I use on my AR. It's great - bright, reliable, etc. I recently got one of those handgun chassis just for fun (MCK). So, I figured I'd get a cheaper red dot for it. I got the predator V3 for $50. I keep both eyes open when using it but I see 2 targets. Is this because it's a cheap red dot? Or is it because it's closer to my eye than on the AR? I definitely don't get this when using the Romeo5 on the AR.

2 targets wouldn't be the red dot. are you left eye dominant shooting right handed? Or are you trying to look through the dot like it is a scope? I see alot of people do that it can cause issues.

Yes, I am left eye dominant shooting right handed. I keep both eyes open. I don't have the issue with the AR.

Some dot designs cause some people issues with a halo. That could be your issue. Have a buddy check the dot to see if they have the same issue to help narrow the issue down some.
Can you describe this more. Not sure if what I am seeing is a halo. Just looks like I am seeing a 2nd target overlapping and offset to the actual target

Does the 2nd target disappear when you close one eye?

If so, try focusing on the target instead of the optic. You may see a second optic housing but you won't see a second red dot (hopefully), so you can disregard the image from your non-dominant eye.

People with astigmatism have an issue with some holo and red dot sights. where the dot will look like a starburst or in some cases a double dot. I have had some I could not use at all because of this, but other people have no issue with. But what you describe is more common with people who shoot cross dominant. try placing the gun so you look through the optic with your dominate eye see if that changes things.

I will try that next time I go out. Thanks

Yes it does. I'll try focusing on the target better next time - although I though I was.

Took me forever to start shooting both eyes open. Try this - hold the MCX in low ready. Stare at the target. Slowly bring the chassis up into firing position with the optic between your dominant eye and the target. You should see one target, one red dot, and two chassis/optics assemblies: one lined up with the target (through your left eye) and one offset to the left (through your right eye). Let us know how it goes.

It's probably a cross-dominance issue.
You are trying to focus the less-dominant eye while having the dominant one open.

The ideal result is that you see the one target and the red dot superimposes on it. So, you are seeing your visual cortex try and switch back and forth between the two images (and the offset distance between the eyes).

Try left-handing the gun and see if the target "unifies" for using the dominant eye as the primary focus.

If using the gun strong-handed, you may have to "squint" the dominant eye a bit (or wink it shut to start) and see if the dot appears on one target.

Depending on the difference in dominance between your eyes, you may be able to "train" your self to use both eyes open. Sometimes that works, sometimes not. Your mileage may vary.

I can't adjust to keeping both open, for me it just doesn't work. I've got 20/20 vision, no issues and I'm right handed , right eye dominant .
I see lots of people saying both eyes open is the "correct" way. Well, maybe for them but not at all for me. I grew up aiming with my left eye closed and if I try both open I can hit the target but accuracy is far worse and I'm unable to clearly focus on the sight.

Some things work for some folks and don't work for others. There is no right way, only what works for individuals. Wait a year and the latest greatest thing will be closing your nondominant eye, it'll be a revolutionary new idea that'll take the shooting world by storm. Lol. If you got to close one, go ahead and close it.

Use your phone camera to look through the lens. If the camera shows one, then it's you. If the camera shows 2 it's the optic.
Edit: I just saw you said two targets not reticles.
