Situation:

First, I have briefly researched www.packing.org and it's a great tool.

I was living in Colorado and happy as can be with my CCW and exercising my "right" to carry. I've since moved from Colorado and established residency in Michigan (for personal reasons) but, in doing so, (knowingly) lost my Colorado CCW permit and membership "privileges." I'm an active duty Army Soldier, Officer and Judge Advocate, currently living in the SE USA and deploying to Afghanistan in 2007 with the 101st.

I'll spare you my rant at the silliness of the situation of needing to figure out a solution to this artificial yet very real problem of having to apply for state licensing to get a firearm carry permit... despite A) it's a God given right, B) it's a man recognized right (Constitutional), and C) I'm a US Soldier. Anyway on to solving the problem.

While I'm in transition and until I can get a Michigan permit (I need to be a MI resident for 6 months and then submit the application in person, which is geographically difficult), I'm pursuing a license from a state that is recognized by many states and is granted to non-residents. I've briefly looked at packing.org and it appears that Florida and Utah are the best. Florida is slightly more expensive and grants "weapon" carry as opposed to only "firearm" carry. Florida also offers recognition by a few more states. Florida takes 90 days or more as opposed to Utah's 75 day turnaround. I'm leaning toward Florida because I really won't have much use for the license until the middle or end of April, which is about 100 days away, which makes the delivery time almost moot.

Finally, the states I'll be spending the most time in will be Kentucky and Michigan and travel between and travel to and within Colorado.

So, here's the question for which I'm seeking advice: I'm looking for input from others here who have these non-residence licenses and the pros and cons of each.

Thanks!

Most Accepted

Florida seems to be the most accepted. However. please note that Michigan does not recognize any not resident permit. They do recognize just about everyone's resident permits. Even some that don't recognize MI. For example, West Virginia.

Any ways, good luck and thank you for your service.
