Sell your stolen gun to the Detroit Police Department

A very good way to put it. Note they never have a "Turn in your controlled substances" or "Turn in your counterfeit money" buyback.

just curious, are there any/ how many reports of people being arrested/held for questioning at such events?

Not typically, as they are usually run on a "no questions asked" basis. That's why its such a great way to get rid of a stolen gun or murder weapon.

Those programs are a complete farce. Most weapons donated are legal, and some are antiques with historical value to them.

Best I know is, they all get melted down for scrap metal.

Gun buybacks run domestically always rub me the wrong way. If someone wanted to sell a gun (which is what a buyback is), they could go to a pawn shop, am I right? They don't run a background check when you SELL, just when you buy.

Edit: I might be wrong, really haven't sold guns to stores before

There is no FFL form for selling a gun to an FFL, just for you to receive it.

However, they will often report the serial number to the police to have it looked into in case it's stolen.

Buybacks are government sponsored scams IMO. People who know no better are getting ripped off by these people.

I wish they would have "Turn in your stupid local politicians" thing, where, sane, intelligent Citizens could march their local politicians by the elbow, and, turn them in for I dunno, for free even, so they could be recycled.

We used to have that: it's called tar and feathering. They were turned loose at the local bridge out of town and told to not come back.

Don't remember the year but it was in the mid 90's, a man I know owned a pawn shop. From time to time he would take in trade or take on pawn firearms that were unsafe to shoot and more or less not worth anything, but he took them in for a fraction of the re-sell value. Either the Birmingham, Al or Jefferson Cty LEO had a buy back paying around $50.00 for the GUNS. This guy would take a box full of wore out junk and turn them in, he made out like a "PAWN BROKER"

While Assange is being hunted for not having even stolen anything himself ...
... you can sell stolen or murder-weapons anonymously??

I'm on board with that.

In terms of the buy back... If they are not making arrests I certainly hope they are making notes of who is turning in what. This way they may be able to nab a few gang bangers down the road.

Of course though, media will spin this into how many stolen guns and murder weapons are on the street and how they should have stricter regulation blah blah blah.

Ah, Detroit. Corruption redefined.

It was nice to see that Detroit's most well-known CCW instructor (Rick Ector) showed up to the buy-back and was informing the visitors of how ridiculous it is.

We need to get on that line.

It was suggested that all gun owners go to that line and spend a dollar more than the city is offering and buy all the good stuff back.

Of course your taking a chance that it might be stolen, but your not breaking any laws, and you might save a valuable gun from destruction.

Can the police dept. that is doing the buy back save guns of value if they see them or does everything turned in have to go and be destroyed? If someone that inherited something rare like a bring back WWII pistol in mint condition and turned it in cause they didn't know what they had and wanted a quick buck would it be destroyed?

More importantly would any guns they got that were reported stolen be returned to the people they were stolen from. Or would they just melt those down?
