Ok, I'd like to sell a few rifles this weekend at the upcoming gunshow. Do I go, meet a prospective buyer, then arrange to meet at an FFL for the transfer?

I took the liberty of editing your thread title. Hopefully someone who knows the procedure in your state will notice and be along shortly. :)

You will have to transfer the rifles through a California licensed dealer. There should be transfer dealers at the gun show or you can arrange to meet at a dealer somewhere else.

If any of the rifles are C&R over 50 years old, you can sell directly without going through a dealer.

EOD Guy is right. The promoters in CA arrange to have an FFL on duty at the shows to do transfers for a fee. You have to come back in 10 days to pick up your guns (God, I'm glad I live in a free state). C&R long guns are exempt but I think that C&R handguns still must go through an FFL.

Thatguy,
Correct, ALL Handguns must go thru 01 FFL in CA.
At the last CM show I went to (July?) a few dealers were doing transfers, but watch for their rates. They are now limited to a $35 fee by law, but many tack on other fees such as "Storage" of $50 or so.

Thanks, Tamara.

Would I leave the rifle with the FFL at the show, take the payment from the buyer, and then he'd have to pick it up from the FFL at the show again 10 days later?

The rifles in question are a Mini-14, K-31, and Marlin 795.

Gun Show at Kern County Fairgrounds

You can take your guns in with you. You don't need a booth. Just carry your guns with tags (attention getting tags) around the show. People will stop you and ask about your guns. You can ask dealers if they want to make you an offer. If anyone other than a dealer buys your gun (s), there are FFL booths who will do the paperwork and hold the guns for the 10 day wait for the buyer.
