I would any suggestions on an in expensive semi-auto rifle with a detachable mag in 223 or 30 caliber.I like the ruger ranch rifle but it is way out of my price range. Also like the saga ak 47. stock configuration is not really an issue i am open to any design just want one that will take a high cap mag. I even like the old sks design with the detachable mag conversion but even they seem to cost a lot more than they used to.

Pretty much any AR15 style rifle fits that bill. The S&W M&P Sport can be found below $600 and can accept 10, 20, 30, 40 round magazines and up. I suppose it depends on whether you want an AR15 rifle or not.

Saigas have gotten into the $525+ range, plus shipping. You can get the M&P-15 Sport for $572 shipped now, and it comes with a 30 rd PMag. Standard capacity (30 rd) PMags are currently selling for under $10 shipped. Factor in the price of 30 rd PMags vs. 20 or 30 rd mags of equal quality for any rifle that doesn't accept STANAG M16/AR-15 mags, and the Sport is your most economical solution. It's also a darn good rifle in its own right.

Used Ruger ranch rifle, Keltec SU16, Romanian Wasr AK, or a budget AR would be your options.

Building an AR would be a way to spread out the cost, buying parts when they go on sale. Spikes tactical or Palmetto state armory would be two good places to start looking.

bought my wasr-10 new for $400 pre-obama, and a cetme sporter for $150 off my cousin. good luck finding deals on used guns because they usually go by fast. i can't even find a used 10-22 if anything, almost worth buying new.

Note that the Saiga can not take a standard capacity (30-round) AK magazine unless you convert it to do so by adding a bullet guide and modifying the mag catch (we don't use the term "high-capacity" because that is a made-up term created by the anti-gun crowd). In order to reach 922(r) compliance, you'll need to do a basic AK conversion to reach the minimum number of US parts. This typically means converting to take a US-made FCG and buttstock/pistol grip.

Figure in about $150 of tools and conversion parts, and a Saturday afternoon.

Ultimately, you'll end up with a very high-quality AK rifle.

I am throwing the m1 carbine in the ring. What are your plans with this rifle?(short ranges, medium, quick on target, scope, etc) Also, how about an sks with the 20 round fixed star clip.

The VZ58 Club thread has a linked article from TTAG that will get you hooked the rest of the way...
