What does SportsSouth, Wideners and some of the other more we'll know companies charge for shipping powders and primers?

Others with current inventory? Shipping Charges?

Need just a few more pounds of powder and some spp's.

HAZMAT charges are around $20. Powder valley will ship 48 lbs for the fee, powder, primers etc.

Others will jack up the price of the items then "wave" the charge on the items but will total more than PV if you ordered from them.

The latest "no HAZMAT charge" from midway is a good example. "Free" but cost more...

If you want a pound, buy local to you, if you want to save money buy many pounds at once on a single fee. The bulk will save you money per pound and shipping/HAZMAT.

Actually I have seen hazmat charges range from $20 to $28 plus shipping. Every online seller has to charge hazmat and that's buying small amounts of powder and primers too expensive.

Another problem, stores like Midway USA don't ship powders from their warehouse, they ship the primers and dropship the powder resulting in two hazmat fees if you buy powder and primers at the same time.

IMO Powder Valley is the best store to buy from online. They will ship both for one hazmat fee and their prices are low.

Midsouth-shooters-supply has good prices on powder, hazmat is $28.50 and shipping is around 10 bucks. If you buy at least 10 pounds, its not a bad deal.

Last time I looked vendors were charging $28.50 Hazmat plus normal shipping. Although some also add a "special handling" for Haz-Mat materials on top of shipping. Off hand I don't remember the vendor since it has been a couple years since I bought any powder on line...

Cabelas only want's $20 for hazmat, $5 shipping a lot of the time if you are Cabela's club member. Price on S+B primers is usually good, higher than some other on powder.

I have seen Hazmat range from about $20 to $28 depending on who you order from.

Shipping charges and Hazmat fees, etc. are not set by the retailer. They're set by the carrier and the assorted interfering government transportation departments.
Those charges are why it's best to buy components locally. They can negate any cost savings found on-line.

I find it worth while to order on line if I am ordering enough stuff.
For example 4 pounds of powder = $20 savings
4K primers = $40 savings

So I have saved $60 if I spend $40 for shipping and hazmat I can almost order another lb of powder for free.

CA won't let you have much stuff on hand so what is a large order for me is small for most everybody else (in free states) but I can still save by ordering.

I do support my local LGS but they are high on a lot of stuff. (powder $30-$35 lb, 1K primers $35)

As always YMMV.

It's not any single charge you should look at, it's the total cost of getting the order to your door. Bass Pro and Gander Mountain, the two closest to me, are a little higher in powder and primers but you can have the order shipped to the stores and not pay shipping or hazmat.

Otherwise, buy large quantities to spread shipping and hazmat further. Split an order with friends if needed.

Sorry but shipping and Hazmat charges are set by the seller.

For instance. Grafs chargers a $7.95 shipping fee for ALL orders and Midway had a sale with no Hazmat.

I believe 20 pounds smokeless powder

That's odd, I don't see the thread he posted earlier that had a photo of more powder than that in it, asking how many folks were "stocking up"....

Yes, SportsSouth is a wholesaler. Got them mixed up because I just got a gun from there. Was thinking MidSouth.

If this is true, did "the carrier and the assorted interfering government transportation departments" somehow decide that they wouldn't charge Midway customers any HazMat fees for a while?

As for HazMat and shipping charges making it, "best to buy components locally"?
Thats probably best decided by comparing total costs on a case by case basis.

If someone needs a single pound of powder to try out, it'd probably be more economical to buy locally, if they need 16 pounds of powder and several thousand primers, buying online is likely to be cheaper.

Remember that someone had to pay shipping/HazMat to get the powder to your LGS and they have to cover those costs when they sell the powder.

There is no free lunch.

Except for taxes! In most cases, you don't have to pay any taxes for online purchases. :D
