When shipping a gun to a Manufacturer service center does it have to be sent by an FFL dealer? Is there a Federal law addressing this or by State? In calling the service center they said I could mail it or send it UPS next day since it was for repair not sale/purchase . I think I know the answer but I could not find it on any official sites.

Thanks

.. as long as you do NOT USE the USPS.

A non-FFL can send to an FFL in another state through a private shipping company, e.g. UPS or Fedex. I believe you are required to disclose to the carrier if it is a handgun.

You are not legally required to notify the carrier when you are shipping to an FFL, only when shipping to a nonlicensee. Of course, since the carriers want to be notified, you can forget about insurance claims if you don't tell them.

what if the manufacturer says they have to replace the gun? do you have to run the background checks again since it is a "new" gun?

Rifles and shotguns can be sent for repair by USPS. Section 432 in publication 52 (http://www.usps.com/cpim/ftp/pubs/pub52.pdf) You will have to fill out PS Form 1508. Also, no markings of any kind that indicate the nature of the contents may be
placed on the outside wrapper or container of any mailpiece containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable (unless you are a class 01 FFL) and must be sent through a common carrier (FedEx, UPS) and declared.

Thanks for the replies. I knew the USPS was out (it's a handgun) and from looking at the UPS website I saw this:

"When you are shipping a package that contains a firearm through a UPS Customer Counter, you must have a letter on record with UPS stating your status as an authorized firearm shipper"

I did not look at Fedex. Upon looking at Fedex today I found this:

FedEx Express can only accept and deliver firearms between areas served in the U.S. under the following conditions: You agree to tender shipments of firearms to us only when either the shipper or recipient is a licensed manufacturer, licensed importer, licensed dealer or licensed collector and is not prohibited from making such shipments by federal, state or local regulations. The shipper and recipient must be of legal age as identified by applicable state law."

Looks like Fedex it is.
Thanks again.
