I have my FFL03 C&R license. I have found that some individuals and companies will only ship to an FFL01 even if the item is C&R eligible. Does anyone know why this is?

For me, if I'm on the fence about buying a C&R and the seller will only ship to an FFL01, it can be a deal breaker due to the transfer fee that I incur by having to receive the firearm through an FFL01.

I think some sellers are overly cautious. When I had a C&R I never had any problems with companies like AIM, Southern Ohio Gun, and a couple others I can't remember at the moment.

Same for me about having a C&R. If the seller doesn't want to accept it, that's OK with me. My money will be accepted by someone else.

Quite simply, most 01FFL's dont even know that C&R's exist. I've been told I was lying and that such a license doesnt exist. I've had dealer's straight up accuse me of illegal activity when I tried using my C&R for transfer. One even asked me to leave when I tried to show him the law's I'd had printed out on the back of my C&R pocket copy. I'm always very polite and follow their "comfortable" routine when my C&R gets refused.

Bottom line, many dealer's, especially older fella's, are set in their ways and no one is going to change their minds or expand their knowledge base, especially coming from a 21-30 year old C&R holder.

This has been my experience with local dealer's in western WA, may not apply to online seller's. It sure is a time saver to walk in, scan a C&R copy and walk out with an old gun.

If you feel like you're being treated like a second-class licensee, then spend your money elsewhere. That's what I do. The only plausible reason I might accept is that to my knowledge it still isn't possible to check the validity of a type 3 C&R online as it is with a type 1 FFL. And this is a failing of the ATF (unless they've remedied it and I've been blissfully unaware). Many great outfits like AIM and J&G treat C&Rs customers very well.

A C&R FFL03 can be verified with a simple phone call. The only drawback is that the call will have to be during working hours back east.

I should add that the biggest drawback is getting the FFL01 to make the call........

I now do a lot of business with a local SOT Class 3. They seem to know the law/rules MUCH better than most 01's (as well they should, dealing with Federally registered weapons).

The people that drive me nuts are those who list guns in the C&R section of gunbroker, but then won't accept a C&R FFL. I don't see them as much lately, but a couple of years ago there were quite a few. I started complaining to both the seller and gunbroker and GB must have cracked down on it.

For a decade and a half I have done a lot of my "firearms shopping" on Gunbroker.

I have often run across Sellers who state that they will only ship the 03FFL firearm in the auction to an 01FFL.

If I have a real interest in the piece, I send a respectful email to them identifying myself as a Virginia 03FFL Licensee and asking if, perhaps, the "Ship to 01FFL Only" is simply Boilerplate.

In way more than half of the cases they have responded that they would be happy to ship direct to me against my 03FFL.

It never hurts to ask, as they say. ;)

FWIW.

Most people will work with you. I have had a C&R for 5 years and house bought almost 100 items that have been shipped direct to me. Well worth the $30.
