Police Hit Grandmother With Taser Gun Five Times

Officer Said Woman Resisted Arrest

UPDATED: 9:52 pm EST December 7, 2005
FRANKLIN, Ohio -- A 68-year-old woman was hit with a Taser gun by police in an Ohio city five times.

The police officer in the case, a lieutenant with the Franklin Police Department, claims he is the victim in the case, NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported.

Beverly Kidwell, 68, was in the waiting room of the police department in suburban Dayton when the incident occurred.

According to police, she came into the station to be arrested for hitting her granddaughter.

Kidwell said she waited a long time in the lobby and, when she got up to leave, the officer hit her with the Taser gun.

"I don't know if he thought I was going to get up and leave or what, but he pulled his gun. I thought it was a gun. I'd never seen a Taser gun in my life and I thought, 'Oh my God. He's going to shoot me. He's going to kill me," Kidwell said.

The police lieutenant said she was resisting arrest, Bowersock reported.

Kidwell said she was in a fetal position and unable to move when the lieutenant ordered her to get up and continued to shock her.

The woman survived five jolts and had to be taken to an area hospital.

Were this my mother or grandmother, Mr. Officer would soon be among the Heavenly Choir. :fire:

I saw the security video of this on tv last night. She was not doing anything but sitting there and she barely moved before the officer tased her. THere was no sound with the video but it looks bad for the officer.

There isn't enough "there" there to have an opinion one way or the other. She could easily be lying like a dog, or telling the truth. I have no way of knowing.

I grant that when you're talking about a woman of 68 years, I have difficulty understanding why even one Taser shot was seen as necessary. But, I wasn't there and the news report is scanty.

Way over the line. The guy's built like a tank--about five times the size of granny. She volunteered herself for arrest. Why would she then be resisting arrest? The video is absolutely damning, on top of all this. She never lays a hand on him--just sits there. Hopefully he'll do some time but more likely he'll just get more desk duty.

What was this idiot thinking?

You know, I normally think the tasered people deserve it, but just looking at the slide show, I am trying to figure out why a tasor or any weapon was necessary. Her picture certainly doesn't look like a lady who would require tasing. The close confines of that room make it look like the officer was in complete control of the situation as well.

Definitely looks bad for the officer (assuming there is not something else).

This must be the same one I saw on the television yesterday. I swear they said she was a great-granny and closer to 90 though. Sure looked like it.

Resisting arrest? ROFL, Good one! I saw the surveillance tape. She was sitting on a bench in the police station when he zapped her. That's already arrested IMO.

How hard did she hit her granddaughter?

And did the girl deserve it? (Was she a teenager or a 3-year-old?)

I'd like to know why she was volunteering for arrest for hitting her granddaughter too.

But tasering granny? That is rediculess. And doing it a total of five times? Even more so. Sad part is he will likly at worst get a tongue lashing and maybe sit a desk in the nice air conditioning for awhile. Less lethal is nice but uses like this are overconfidence in their safty and way to quick to use.

I'm not sure the officer didn't do the right thing. Has anyone here ever smelled a 68 yr old woman's farts? I think the arresting officer was just scared for his life.

Riiiiiiiight. That old lady looks to be a right fell beast to be sure.

No audio, but that is as plain as day. Even if she were cursing the ground his mother bore him on, that would be no excuse. That SOB needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Or hung with his own taser leads.

:fire: :cuss: :fire:

Maybe she called him a dirty bum and he thought she said dirty bomb.
Call Homeland security now.

Seems like I hear about alot of excessive tazering in Ohio. I think there have been two deaths related to tazers there over the last 12 months.

jmm

I try to be supportive of law enforcement, I know they deal with a lot of scum on a daily basis, but it seems that a lot of officers are treating their tasers as cattle prods and non-LEOs as the cattle. Such actions might make the officer feel like a big man for a day, but they have a terrible effect on the agency’s relationship with the public.

Margaret Thatcher

Is it just me, or does granny resemble a young Margaret Thatcher?

I winder if you could duct tape the taser leads to a certain part of this guys anatomy and give granny the button for a few minutes?

I am not cop bashing here as I have family/friends as LEO's however modern
police forces refect society in that very little common sense used,
my opinion.
