My indoor range has a Beta Chrony, but I usually get an "ERR9". Called Chrony, they confirmed that's a lighting issue. Thing is, I've even turned off the range lights, & STILL get err9! No flo lights anywhere. Using 40w frosted bulbs. Lights aligned over sensors.

Confused & Frustrated.

Got the incandescent light kit from Chrony. Thinking about trying brighter than 40W lights.

Chronys want a nice consistent bright source of light without it being sharp.

In other words, the eyes of the 2 sensors should be looking up at an equivalent of a big sheet of white paper. That is why chronys work better on cloudy days. The eyes want to both see the same amount of white.

So if you have a darker area that has fluctuating amounts of lights or low light levels or extremely bright sharp light sources (like the sun directly beaming into the eyes), it will cause errors.

Good advice from Bobetech and NCSMitty.

  • Gently clean the lenses with soft cloth. Don't scratch them.
  • Use nice clear white screens, make sure they aren't burned brown from the lamps.
  • Align the white screens directly over the lenses.
  • Keep any other source of light from shining directly into the lenses, not just fluorescent, but any other direct source of light.
  • Make sure the box is opened fully so the lenses and screens are exactly the same distance apart.
  • Keep your muzzle blast far away from the screens (15 feet is good).
  • Shoot a trajectory directly over the center of the lenses, about 10 to 12 inches above them.
If the equipment is in good operating order, these precautions will give you successful readings, BUT you still get an occasional error if the chrony brain doesn't get a good reading. Always bring an extra round or two per string to make up for the errors.
